News Star Trek: The Motion Picture Director's Cut is being restored in 4K, launching first on Paramount+

I hate to break it down to brass tacks, but Paramount is a corporation. They’re going to do what makes them money. A six pack (that history proves Trek fans will gobble up) will make more money than a two-pack. I feel for those who made this purchase and got the switcheroo, but it’s really no different than when the movies came out on DVD, they worked their way back with the single disc editions and then starting with TMP DE, did two-disc sets.
I have no desire to buy all the movies again so I’m sitting out this release for now. At some point, when they’re on sale, I might buy them individually. But really the 4K digital copies do me fine for now.

Oh I'm sure this will sell just fine as isMaking the SLV a 4K exclusive is a major bummer for me. And I daresay the expensive box might sell better if it weren't the case.
I'm sure it will, but I can state with absolute certainty it would sell better if it had a BD version of the SLV in it. Even if it only sold better by one unit.
Is the SLV worth seeing? Better or worse than the DE?
A bonus, while nice, isn’t quite the same as being included in the film. At the same time, my being a little disappointed isn’t going to stop me from purchasing the set. There are far bigger things to be upset about in the world other than the release of a favorite movie of mine not being quite what I want it to be.
For me, the DE is definitely a better film. The SLV is more for when you're in the mood to really sit and stew in a film for a long time. Like the TV cut of Superman: The Movie.
Yeah, I think the SLV is by far the worst cut of the movie. When people talk about "the Slow Motion Picture", they're thinking of the film they saw on TV. Those scenes were cut for good reasons.
But it was also the first version I saw, so I love it for pure nostalgia, and I'm glad it's coming back.

The DE is better but there are little moments, like Uhura's comment that it could hold a crew of tens of thousands, which are brief and add a dash of colour, which I wish had made the DE cut.

The early scenes with Ilia are godawful. Persis is robotic as she chews up the "sexually immature species" line (although her smile is electric) and Takei's blundering as he fights of his attraction is overbaked. The movie does tend to go on and on and on. But I love the idea of having it.
It's a defective version of the movie. Bob Wise was not happy with it.
Only thing it fixes is dialogue that was awkwardly sped up in the theatrical and director's cuts, for reasons I still don't understand. Transmittheimageofalientostarfleetadviseweareattemptingfurthercommunication.
Paramount's decision to release the remaining 4k-remastered movies on physical media was informed by how many copies of I-IV they sold. And they know it. Not keeping their release strategy consistent with what consumers had already purchased from them is a faithless move.
Nobody complains about them replacing/upgrading from the original DVDs, half of which were effortless non-anamorphic recycled laserdisc transfers.
And the inevitable reminder that such-and-such is company, that works for profit, as if consumers are somehow "naive" to assume it would be in their interest to meet them halfway... gets really, REALLY old.
Holding out paid off for you because enough people bought the boxset.
