News Star Trek: The Motion Picture Director's Cut is being restored in 4K, launching first on Paramount+

I totally get that. We slowly updated our systems over about a 5 year period, starting with a now fairly outdated 4K screen, then a UHD player, then a 4K Apple TV and finally a renewed 4K receiver last year. I don’t know that I’ll ever buy another physical media player again. But I’d love to get a new display in the next 2-3 years.

My TV can display discs but not 4k media files. Just upgrade your player rather than your TV.

The DE is better but there are little moments, like Uhura's comment that it could hold a crew of tens of thousands, which are brief and add a dash of colour, which I wish had made the DE cut.

Hybrid cut all the way for me although I think my equipment will struggle to rip a 4k disc. This grail is costing me thousands.
Tens of thousands is silly. The damned thing could easily hold millions.

I replaced my Sony BD player w/ a newer one a few years ago. It has 4k capabilities, but the display doesn't. So, when I play BDs, it automatically downscales to 1080p. I think the player cost less than $100.

I still don't have any 4k discs (stopped buying discs several years ago). But, if I do buy any discs, I can still play them even though I won't enjoy the 4k resolution, HDR, etc.

Exactly like mine but a HD quality SLV should still look pretty decent.

I had a 4k player and 4k discs before I upgraded my TV. I watched them and enjoyed the superior transfers in HD. In at least one case, Superman: The Movie, the sound was better on the 4k too, over the standard Blu-ray.

As much as I want the SLV, there is no way I'm paying $100 for the set that it comes in. I just can't bend over that far for Paramount to stick it to me again.

Somewhat related. It has been confirmed that the new ST 6 Blu-ray will NOT have the Director's cut on it.
Only the UHD (from the 2-pack release) will have the Director's Cut branched with the Theatrical. It may have been a space issue on the Blu-ray disc as all the bonus features are that disc as well -- along with all the multiple audio choices and subtitles. Also it is confirmed that the branched version of ST 6 will use the 2.35 aspect ratio and NOT the 2.00.

Also the STTMP SLV will have 2.0 sound and the Theatrical will stay with the 7.1 The STTMP DE will have Atmos and an isolated soundtrack option of the altered music score. Altered because the movie trims some scenes that had a score. So both the theatrical and the DE will have isolated scores.

That's an interesting development, if accurate. The original announcement on the official site didn't make that distinction. It states: "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country – Ultra HD & Blu-ray
Includes Director’s Cut"

The STTMP DE will have Atmos and an isolated soundtrack option of the altered music score. Altered because the movie trims some scenes that had a score. So both the theatrical and the DE will have isolated scores.

You realize the isolated score on the theatrical cut is also edited to match the film as well, right? You can hear some edits during "Spock Walk" and "The Meld," as well as "Warp Point Nine." Now that I think about it, "Total Logic" is also shortened in the theatrical cut. I'm sure there are more examples.

Yeah I know that the original score doesn't match note for note with any version of the movie. Just stating that it will be different from the isolated score on the theatrical.

As for the original announcement -- it was intentionally or unintentionally vague.
By showing a combo pack that contains both a UHD and BR disc and stating "Contains both versions of the movie" is unspecific. There are literally 8 ways that could be true. They chose to put both versions on the UHD and only the Theatrical on the BR. There was suspicion when the BR coming out the same day did not include the "contains both versions.." boast. Then people found pictures on Amazon of the back covers that clarified the situation.
