Fans and tie ins have had Trelane and Q related in some ways for a while. It seems to me that this is just adding to what was already had fan speculation.
I actually think Trelane has more to do than that.Instead we get Trelane, whose role feels like an elaborate prop to facilitate the soap-opera mechanics.
I took it as a reference to Peter David's novel Q, Squared where at the end it is indeed revealed that Trelane is Q's son.His father was voiced by de Lancie last time out.
That's not a clue. It's a considered choice.
Trelane is a Q.
Doesn't matter what the TOS writers intended.
He isn't.Trelane could very well be the same Q Jr from Voyager.
He isn't.
Go rewatch TOS and you'll see it's not an 'over-reading' on TOS the Writers ALL had her pining after Spock at every opportunity.
It was a minor little interesting side show. It was way more a piece of fanfic discussion then it ever was something important. It would be like rebooting TNG and making half the show about Yar and Data (actually they did exactly that with Picard and Crusher)
I really don't think it was anything more than fan service to have it dominate a number of episodes and men have pretty much dominated every Chapel plot in SNW. It's the same for Spock who has been reduced to some romcom lead.
What was up with La'an at the end. I know they're laying the ground work for something to happen to her by the end of the season, which is starting to get a little annoying with the telegraphing, but it does seem odd that she was completely cutting off her friendship with Spock. At this point I'm starting to wonder if they are just going to have her suicide herself.
I don't think it was that all extreme. She was simply having the usual human difficulty of being "just friends" with a former lover, especially right after the breakup. This is perfectly normal for humans, even if Spock, being Vulcan, was taking a more "logical" approach to the situation.
Interesting take. T'pring on one side of the figurative fence, wanting a too idealized Vulcan version and dumping him eventually, La'an on the other, wanting a more Human one, and not taking it beyond casual anyway, and already having broken up with him; Chapel sort of being the match in the middle, sitting on it, but her unwilingness or inability to commit leads to the situation in TOS.
I also think that something more than a passing line needs to happen with the Chapel and Spock storyline in SNW still, because there was sooo much buildup in the early seasons it would probably be a narrative waste not to cash in on it. Unsure about what exactly, but something.
La'an's goodbye to Spock felt quite layered.
Well, Q's illegitimate son. Trelane's (apparent) father was another Q, while his mother was an unspecified sort of higher being. I don't think it's likely that Trelane is supposed to be q from Voyager, but Trelane being half-Q seems like a fine fanwank for how q could be the first Q that was ever born and not... however the original Qs came about. It's less awkward than fitting Amanda Rodgers into that bit of lore.I took it as a reference to Peter David's novel Q, Squared where at the end it is indeed revealed that Trelane is Q's son.
Source?He isn't.
It's been a very long time so I could be misremembering, but I'm sure at the very end Q acknowledges that Trelane is his son, rendering all the other stuff misdirection.Well, Q's illegitimate son. Why not? They've already shown that they walk through time the way we walk on the ground. There's no limit as long as there is ground.
I think he can be and I hope he is. It's a nice reference back to a great character. I loved Q Jnr. It really helped that he was played by John De Lancie's son - the similarities were clear. It enriches the Voyager episode to think that he jumped away from a while, played with humans and jumped back to get an earful from Aunt Kathy before mending his ways.
Any links to Q are so dumb to me.

TREKCORE: Not to get too deep into the weeds here, but Q did have a son on Star Trek: Voyager. Is Trelane and that character the same person, in your interpretation?
GOLDSMAN: No, no — but we’re also saying that even the individuation into single anthropomorphized creatures might not even be typical inside the Q Continuum. In fairness, we’re just using labels that afford us the opportunity to track through and make them familiar.
You could even say Q and Trelane are the same being in different times. I mean, you can kind of go up and down with it, but ‘father’ and ‘son’ is kind of the easiest way to do it.
MYERS: That’s what it sounds like to us. It may not be what they’d say to each other back in the Continuum.
Checks out. I will grant that I'm less familiar with the Trek novels and only recalled comic art indicating a shared plane of existence, like divine councils in mythologies. It is what many of the current writers probably grew up on. "Q, Squared" by Peter David linked them in an official licensed publication thirty-plus years ago.

How else can we pass the Trekkie quiz? That was just them leaving it to the imagination. I congratulate them for that. Trek doesn't do it often.
