Its on the dvds as an extra. We never ever saw a counselor on Star Trek. So they didnt have a counselor. But im theorizing the time change to khans birth may have created this issue like all the others. The romulans basically caused s schism in the timeline by messing with it too much. A sepsration if you will. So in this reality counselors were assigned to ships much earlier.
Go rewatch TOS and you'll see it's not an 'over-reading' on TOS the Writers ALL had her pining after Spock at every opportunity.

But not actually part of the episode, and therefore not canon. And even then, later cuts of TWOK inserted a line of dialogue establishing Scotty had a sister, but since that wasn't in the original theatrical cut, SNW isn't acknowledging it.
This season may be the most variable in Trek history — several top-tier episodes and several awful ones.
At least it keeps me tuning in every week because there’s a good likelihood it’ll be a great episode.
This episode started out strong. Pike asking if he was back in the musical episode made me laugh out loud, but the rest was forgettable. I gave it a because at least it kept my attention through to the end.

It was a minor little interesting side show. It was way more a piece of fanfic discussion then it ever was something important. It would be like rebooting TNG and making half the show about Yar and Data (actually they did exactly that with Picard and Crusher)
I really don't think it was anything more than fan service to have it dominate a number of episodes and men have pretty much dominated every Chapel plot in SNW. It's the same for Spock who has been reduced to some romcom lead.

Again, I'm recalling Marla McGivers, the ship historian whose name Kirk could barely recall in "Space Seed." Not every crew member is going to be major character week after week.
So it may be a case that, yeah, there were counselors and therapists and psychiatrists on the Enterprise back in the day, but the role of "counselor" didn't become a Big Deal until Picard's time.
We never saw Chekov during season one, but he was there.
Just because something wasn't seen, doesn't mean it does not exist.
Surely this is just eye of the viewer? We can assume there are myriad varied roles throughout Starfleet, but the focus of the TNG show had a counsellor in it. No Vulcan, there was still Vulcans about. Voyager focused on the Vulcan etc. It became a big deal in the 1980s, not Picard's time.
They can't have ever taken a shit either then...
He was there partway through Season 1 as a retcon because of Wrath of Khan. He didn't recognize Harry Mudd despite Mudd being in Season 1 meaning Chekov came in after Mudd's first TOS appearance but before Space Seed.
Not something to be proud of.
Hopefully a new "Star Wars" comes along so SNW 4 doesn't tank Star Trek like TOS 3 did.
TOS Season 3 has some of my all time favorite episodes in it of all time (redundancy is intentional and used as a parallelism) so it's not a season I find offensive or bad, and only was taught to hate it after joking a Trek fan club in 6th grade.
TOS was tanking long before Season 3. it barely got renewed after season 2
A lot of people said this, but it was just another dumb soap opera gag that reminded me all over again how much I hated the episode.
I didn't hate this episode, but I'm just so sick of the tone of this season - as if the showrunners are winking at us through the screen and looking for praise at being so clever.
It's all writers writing for other writers.
I enjoyed Academy because I knew going in what it was and that it wasn't aimed at me.
I had no problems giving up on Discovery once I realised what they were going for and it wasn't the show I expected. So I hold no ill will against it despite not liking it.
SNW on the other hand feels like a show very much aimed at me. It's full of Community, Lower Decks and Orville style episodes which are 3 shows I absolutely love. That's what makes it different to me as it's a show I should love but hate so I can judge it as just being a terrible show rather than one I just don't get because it's "not for me".
