I understand from her Bluesky comments that she's displeased and concerned.

She points out a nice comparison that SNW is trying to do LD humor without the weight of it. She compares everyone in SNW acting stereotypically Vulcan with a LD episode dealing with Orion stereotypes and how it dealt with that in a good way.

I didn't like LD, but may check that episode out as it seems like handled the "alien stereotypes" thing well.

Just when I thought it couldn't get any worse.

I had a very brief moment of excitement when it started. Going through an interesting star system. They're going to visit a planet. Finally some exploring!

For shore leave. Oh. Of course.

Heavens forbid you lot actually do any fucking work. It's just constant dating, and weddings, and singing and holodecks and period dramas.

That fucking engineer high fiving the captain just makes me cringe on every level. This sort of humour was fine as an occasional dose with Lwaxana Troi but it's just incessant here.

And I thought ahh Chapel is drugging up the away team but not getting involved what a miracle... oh no, I was wrong... of course she has to be involved. Doctor M'Benga just floats around the ship doing fuck all because she's got to do EVERYTHING. Every relationship, every mission, every fight, every sciency bit... it's the Chapel show as usual.

And then just dross. I fast forwarded most of this episode so I can't really accurately review it.

God it's SUCH a good cast. And it's such a nice set. And they have the power to go anywhere and do anything and meet anyone and tell stories that inspire us and challenge us and explore our new horizons.

But really, SNW is just one big holodeck show. It may not be a literal holodeck, but it's just one big FARCE most weeks now.

It's a shame, there was so much potential in season one and some of two... but season three has just given up really on any lucid storytelling. It's just endless farce and relationship drama. Small nuggets of story they do form they just give up on immediately (Gorn PTSD anyone?)

Ironically I said to my uncle before this episode "It's not bad enough to give up on SNW, but I worry it's heading that way." Well, it just done a slam dunk in that regard.

Such a waste. Such a sad waste of storytelling.

Three and a-half Vulcans (with bonus Romulan).

It was...fine
It was like little vignettes with a main character being replaced by a stereotype of a Vulcan. Many parts, but they never became greater than the sum.
I didn't the get point of the charade with Doug; they could have been honest upfront about why they needed him or just have Spock talk to him right from the get-go. I liked Doug more in the post-credit scene.
Pike was just acting like a weirdo.
La'an would've made a great version of the Romulan Commander from "The Enterprise Incident".
Again, this show is all over the place about genetic engineering.

I know this episode was meant to be a silly comedy episode but it did not work for me. It felt too over the top and forced. The writing was terrible. Cringy dialogue. Terrible acting. You could have done a comedy where a virus or serum transform some of the crew into Vulcans and had more situational comedy, and explored what it means for Vulcans to control their emotions. But instead they just made Vulcans into the joke.

The scene where they first transform into Vulcans and they fall to the ground, totally overacting that scene, crawling on all fours shouting "emotions are overwhelming". WTF. That was so bad.

It was completely ridiculous stereotypes of Vulcans, literally shouting "it is logical" for everything. It is like the writers think that they have to constantly tell the audience that something is logical to sound Vulcan.

They constantly put down Spock for being half-Vulcan and act like they are real Vulcans even though they just got a magic serum that changed their biology and have only been a Vulcan for a few hours...
I think perhaps you missed the part where their 'Vulcaness'(?) was completely based on Spock's perception of his fellow Vulcans, especially after his experience of being considered less-than and being treated abysmally, due to his half-human DNA.

At this point in his life his idea of being Vulcan, IS a Stereotype.

Also, I think we can perhaps put Doug in a similar Vulcan category as Sybok, but not quite so radical.
(afterall he married a Non-Vulcan) :techman:

Sounds like SNW leaned in to the Voyager style with stereotypes.

As Spock is torn between his human and Vulcan sides, I am torn between my "OH, JUST HAVE FUN" side and my "why is it so stupid" side. So I'll try to approach the episode from both angles...

"Why is it so stupid" first to get it out of the way so we can finish the post positively: Yeah, I hate how dumbed down the science is in Star Trek now. I know it's never been hard sci-fi but they don't even make an effort anymore. A character will say something scientific then someone else will say "wow, science is SOOOOOOOO sciencey!" They're supposed to be Starfleet officers! They're supposed to be smart!

Sorry, I went on a tangent and maybe that doesn't apply as much to this episode, it's just a thing that annoys me. The way they treated the Vulcan DNA is stupid as fuck, of course. Vulcans work to suppress their emotions, they aren't born as completely emotionless robots (the episode even acknowledges this by making La'an different.) Injecting "Vulcan DNA" into you wouldn't just make you turn into a perfectly logical asshole with Vulcan hair instantly. And - and I'm being too serious here I know - It's kind of problematic how La'an turns out to be a "bad" Vulcan because she's got "bad genes" from her distant ancestor Khan. There's no "dictator gene" to be passed on.

Finally I'll just say this: when previous (live action) Trek series did comedy episodes they could get pretty silly, but I don't think they ever broke the reality of the show. DS9 would do Ferengi comedy episodes (of varying quality), but the silliness was confined to the Ferengi. They wouldn't have Sisko marry Moogie and fall in love with her and eat tube grubs in a meeting with Admrial Ross or something. With SNW it feels like the comedy episodes exist in an entirely different reality to the rest of the show. I feel that's the difference!

I hate how every Spock-centric episode is a comedy. Give Ethan Peck another note to play.

In TOS, McCoy doesn't know what a mind meld is and it's treated as a secret and sacred things to the Vulcans. Here, Uhura somehow knows about it (don't tell me the knowledge is passed through DNA) and casually does one on Beto. WHATEVER. I KNOW IT'S A COMEDY, OKAY.

"OH, JUST HAVE FUN."

Patton Oswalt was funny. I found the bit with him, Spock and Una funnier than the transformeed crewmembers part. "We have two children. They have different names." or whatever the line was from Spock made me laugh out loud. The post credit scene was very funny and I liked Ethan Peck grinning at the end because it reminded me of Nimoy breaking character and laughing near the end of The Voyage Home.

I liked that Spock's human side was what helped with getting Doug to help (though they could have made more of this in the episode.)

I liked how the Spock/La'an fight turned into a dance.

Marie finally showed a bit of personality.

Jess Bush looked great as a Vulcan.

I didn't hate it, I'm not going to quit the show, but I hope the next two episodes aren't dumb.
