Even ignoring the fact that Klingon K-Pop was just a fun and funny scene which should be all the justification needed for choosing that it also fits with the episode's premise better than Klingon opera would have. We know Klingons sing while on duty, whether it be opera or battle shanties or whatever. That's nothing unusual and thus would not make them want to show up and attack an anomaly to free themselves from singing opera just so they can go back to singing opera. Singing and dancing like a K-Pop band? That is unusual and probably threatens their honor (because reasons). That is a reason to go attack some cowardly and dishonorable anomaly for the glory of the Empire or whatever.

Remember, the point of this episode is that the singing is unusual and out of place. Klingon opera in a Klingon ship would not have been either. K-Pop on a Klingon ship on the other hand...

That's actually a good point. I didn't even consider that angle.

I do remember the Klingon General saying something about dishonor....

I would have liked it a lot more if we had some real Klingon opera!

Seriously. Klingon opera is a thing. So when they had the Klingons sing, THIS is what we get? How could they drop the ball like that?

I mean, if the Romulans were hit by this, what would they do? Grunge?
it's been stated in this thread before but the producers did do both a Klingon Opera version of that scene, before they did the K-pop version.

But after watching it they felt it was too much like everything else in the episode; and they wanted something different for the Klingons. I believe they said it was Bruce Horak who came up with the idea of doing a K-Pop version; and the producers liked that idea, and ultimately that's the version that we got for the streamed episode.

Given that they did the Klingon Opera version, I would expect that perhaps we'll see that as a deleted scene on the Strange New Worlds Season 2 Blu-ray discs.

Nah. The Romulan elite would sing country music, and their oppressed underclasses would sing hip hop, blues, and rock'n'roll.

Grunge would be a different culture. I'm thinking their signature song would be... "Smells Like Breen Spirit." ;)

Not really seeing the Romulan elite getting down to Willie Nelson or Blake Sheldon. Music for the plebs.

A lot of modern corporate country music is all about preserving traditional hierarchies. They would love Jason Aldean.

Also, the image of Romulan senators singing country music is just funny. :)

Now I'm kind of wishing they had done a musical episode on Picard, and had Laris sing a country song thus revealing a previously unknown indication that she hails from Romulan aristocracy.

IOW, the strata from which most soldiers are usually drawn.

What, you think Klingons would be different?

The idea that all those head-butters are samurai is just as silly as the claim that everyone serving on Federation starships is an officer.

Hell, in TOS the Klingon soldiers felt like recruits and average, everyday Klingons doing patriotic service or answering their Empire's version of the draft. Romulans have always felt no different even with tthe newer makeup designs.
