Because Roddenberry said it was new, in TMP. That may not be much, but really. Why?

It's one of those things where you ask "Who knows what a K'T'Inga is? The people who know what a D-7 is and what a K'T'Inga is. Anyone else? Nope. There is pretty much nobody who sees the TOS Klingon ship and thinks of it by that name.

So there is no upside to using it and all downside.

Just going to say it: missed opportunity that Spock didn't reference 3D chess by expressing his desire to ascend to his "queen's level" (i.e. be what he considers a man worthy of Christine).

What does canon say?

Well, "canon" says that Kt'inga is a word that the SNW writers pulled out of their butts because it's never been said before.

"Canon" also says that the word "Constitution" never appeared on a Starship Class bridge, but here we are. Curiously Roddenberry used the word in the same place he used "K't'inga".

"The Klingon vessels were big, dangerous looking—undoubtedly their new K’t’inga-class heavy cruisers which some Admiralty tacticians feared might prove faster and more powerful than Starfleet’s First Line Constitution-Class starships."

Yes, finally canon.

Amazing what information fans assume should be known yet isn't apart of the official record. Fascinating.

and the Enterprise was not
Yes it is. It appears on the Enterprise's plaque in one of the TOS movies.

And in SNW, though in SNW they try to have it both ways

Constitution Class is a semi-retcon. The name did show up in TOS, but it's not legible.
This graphic was originally created for 'Space Seed', but none of the camera angles showed it.

It is visible in 'The Trouble with Tribbles' though.

There we have it then. The Defiant was a Constitution class and the Enterprise was not. So I don't know what the hell SNW is doing.

The Defiant and the Enterprise have both been shown and referred to being Constitution class. They have same hull design. The same interiors. In the same era. How are they NOT the same class ship if it has been proven in dialogue and graphics?

(Before you say SNW is showing the Enterprise as being different, keep in mind it's a visual update from over half a century ago.)
