I've tried.

15 mins in and the episode has failed to grab me in the way that good musicals should.

I'm not against TV shows experimenting like this, but it's a risky proposition to be sure.

The obvious comparison for me is Once More with Feeling, which I adore, and purchased the cd soundtrack as well as the dvd (despite already having the episode on the season box set), and I am prepared to give musical episodes of shows I like a fair chance, but the songs have to be better.

Buffy in the graveyard at the start of Once has charm, humour, and her character actually feels like she is singing live.

2 songs into this episode and there is no charm, the humour falls flat, and the actors are so obviously lip syncing that it just feels wrong.

The only worthwhile moment for me was Kirk interacting with Spock.

And Carol Kane is just awful.

NOPE.

Wasn't the fellowship only for three months? They could easily vault that in the space of one episode. Season 3 premiere set immediately after season two finale, then ep two set three months later.

Potentially.
Admittedly I missed that line of dialogue when I made that post, but I will reiterate I DONT WANT CHAPEL TO LEAVE THE SHOW! Though I suppose for the purposes of continued great story writing I can accept it, AS LONG AS SHE COMES BACK !!

Discuss, or be courteous and be quiet.

I sort of understand this. I did wonder if all the cast were really singing themselves. They were all so good. There was a rawness, and the fact that SMG isn't a great singer for example really adds to it feeling 'real'.

Is Carol Kane that awful engineer who is a bit like a Ferengi who isn't? I find her a jarring inclusion.

Very much so. This music and singing in this felt very overproduced, which is where it lost me.

Live musicals are obviously 'real' and as you mention that Buffy episode has a 'raw' quality to it that made it feel real.

This to me, for the reasons mentioned, was just unwatchable 15 minutes in.

they all sang their parts but some with a lot of intervention to fix their pitch, also it was at times obvious they were lip-syncing to previously recorded tracks, which is the only way to do this kind of stuff on a TV stuff but I guess it could have been masked better (didn’t annoy me at all but I understand if it did for some people).

I am now more convinced than ever that the TOS crew is playing the new Capt Pike DLC in the rec-room. That musical finale and gauge was right out of a video game challenge.

Are you sure it's not Riker?

Or maybe Boimler with a pirated Ferengi edition?

I was thinking we must be watching the "players", so I was going with Chapel, M'Benga, and Uhura in their off time. They get Kirk to play once in awhile. I'm not sure if Spock is actually playing or if its just his NPC. We haven't seen Riker, and I wasn't quite sure how to justify the Boimler episode. I guess he could just be playing a round of it in the future, and "time travel" is how the game handles being out-of-date and on its 10th re-release over the last hundred years.
