I guess it depends on how we define edge. I just mean doing something that feels new and exciting; not just for Star Trek but for science fiction TV in general. Being on the forefront.Star Trek really doesn't feel like it has had an edge for a while. Into Darkness maybe my last edgier feel. I like Discovery but I don't think that's what is meant by fans when they ask for an edge.
SNW and Lower Decks are the flagships shows of the franchise now IMO. They're Star Trek shows made in the vein of the pop culture idea of what Star Trek is. They're shows where the characters all know they're on a Star Trek show.
My reasoning on the petering is that if there’s never any lasting consequences there won’t be any dramatic tension because nothing really matters. And if nothing matters people get bored and find something new to watch.Fair. I disagree on drama petering out but I appreciate your explanation.
They shows where the characters all now they're on a Star Trek show.
I can sort of see it with LDS. Though Boimler and Mariner are portrayed as Starfleet fans not Star Trek fans. Which is not quite the same thing.
What is it about SNW that makes you think that?
More episodes means more chances to miss episodes. They could, and did, do serialized story telling before VCR's. Yes, they did do episodic TV for the sake of casual viewers but serialized TV shows were there too for those who could handle it.
TBH, it's something that's difficult to articulate. There's a meta aspect to it all.

it has a nearly sixty year history to draw from that many folks are familiar with. Not sure that's "meta" . No one in the shows seems to be aware they are in TV Shows.TBH, it's something that's difficult to articulate. There's a meta aspect to it all.
It's not just ST. It's something you see in a lot of modern productions.
It was the 1960s. They made every episode self contained so people wouldn't feel lost if they missed an episode. They couldn't binge or record tv back in those days. So they did the right thing.
...The show was one of the first seen on US network television to talk about sex and infidelity in a frank manner. As such, ABC executives would only allow the show to be aired at 9:30 p.m. Eastern/Pacific time, a time at which many children and teenagers were expected to be in bed. With the show in a ratings slump in 1968, the show was moved to 8:30 p.m. in order to draw the viewers they once had shunned...
Pike's facial reactions in ANY scene he's in; in any episode of SNW are marvelous and really add to the scenes and show what a real consumate actor he is.I love Pike's reactions to everyone singing in the first song.
Again it was a show with over 500 episodes. It was a soap. Star Trek was not.** - Peyton Place (1964 -1969 TV series on ABC @ 9:30 PM) )has entered the Chat..

Which Star Trek no longer is, and hasn't been since VOY.Being on the forefront.
Which Star Trek no longer is, and hasn't been since VOY.
Borrow from other places has been in Star Treks DNA since it's creation. Let's face it, Forbidden Planet's fingerprints are all over Star Trek. Trek's also borrowed from SF lit, Shakespeare. Westerns and even contemporary SF properties throughout it's run. It's visited Enemy Mine a couple of times. TMP was clearly influenced by 2001.One thing I would agree on is that star trek used to do its own thing. Since Abrams everyone has wanted it to be more like Star Wars and others like the marvel universe. Star Trek had its own style in terms of tech, aliens and starfleet morals but now we see it following other franchises more and more. Not just slightly pretty much copycatting like the alien movies with the going storylines. Star trek is still good but I wish they would just do their own thing more rather than follow series or franchises the current creatirs admire.
My heart is kinda broken about it today. Which is weird because I swore to everyone I was not invested in this relationship because it would end badly.Made him some soup and hosted his Katra didn't make the cut.![]()
