Christine Chong is a terrific singer and I really enjoyed the song... but this isn't Star Trek and this at a point when the show couldn't sink any lower than "Those Old Scientists". Mediocre committee writers who wants to have "fun".

If there were more episodes per seasons then I wouldn't mind as much, but with two "Worst of Star Trek" in short order in a season that's merely ten episodes...

1/10
I hate to repeat myself*, but how is an anomaly makes the crew do weird things, they science it and solve the problem not Star Trek?
Same for TOS, visitors from the past/future cause trouble, do hijinks, connect witht he crew until they science the problem and send them back home. That sure as hell is Star Trek.

*Actually I don't.

this felt like a TNG episode. One could say that the crew losing memories and Riker and Ro start having a relationship isn’t Star Trek either but it’s the same deal. They encounter an anomaly that makes them sing and they use science and realize through song how to get out of it. That’s basically a Trek staple.

I actually found the episode really cringe on the first watch. But now I've had the OST on repeat for 48 hours and I gotta say... Christina Chong and Celia Rose Gooding really knocked it out of the park- fantastic singing in their songs.
I’ve listened to both their songs like 10 times already. I was shocked how much I enjoyed those songs. Keeping Secrets is a good one too.

One of the things I enjoy about SNW is the overall vibe. It can be serious (deadly, even) but the writing, direction, acting, set/costume design, etc. etc. etc. has a certain brightness to it. This episode in particular oozed brightness...the cast was alive with energy the whole time and that made it fun to see. The energy in the last song was very palpable. The best Trek is NOT dour and portentous. I should note that as serious as DS9 often was it was not dour and portentous either, which I think is to its benefit and credit.

Feeling my age: I confess I wince whenever I see commentary about this episode citing "traditional" musicals like . . . Les Miz and Phantom of the Opera?

I mean, I know, intellectually, that those shows are close to forty years old now, but I still think of them as "modern" musicals, as opposed to Oklahoma, My Fair Lady, Brigadoon, etc.

Ouch.

Just like I still think of, say, "Back to the Future" and "The Terminator" as "modern movies," as opposed to "Forbidden Planet" or "Bride of Frankenstein."

(Dare I confess that the soundtrack album to "My Fair Lady" was probably the very first LP I ever bought with my own money, back when I was a kid?)
PSST...Forbidden Planet was 21 years old when STAR WARS hit theaters for the fist time, and in my then 14 year old brain, yeah Forbidden Planet was an OLD film.

Cut to 2016, watching Captain America Civil War, and we have:

Peter Parker: "Hey? Anybody seen that really old movie, Empire Strikes Back..."

And my first thought was like Rhoady's line:

"...How old is this kid..."

Then it did hit me that yeah, at that time (2016), ESB was 36 years old... (And then I also recalled what I thought about Forbidden Planet when I went to see STAR WARS at age 14 in 1977.:wah:)
;)

What an interesting episode, along with Lower decks, certainly among the most unique Star Trek episodes ever. As long they don't keep repeating the same type all the time, I like how they are pushing creative ways to tell a Start Trek story. Kinda like how TNG often uses the holodeck and have Picard burst into Shakespeare or Dixon Hill, or Data as Sherlock Holmes. Not everyone likes musicals, but as a one off, I think it's brilliant way to let the actors show off their skills while telling a Trek story.

Some of the cast can really sing. While the music isn't going to be a Broadway hit, they really sang well. La'An was a stand out, and so was Uhura. Even Spock had a good voice. A singing Spock, this must be the first time in Trek lore, although he does play that harp thing.

I like how Carol Marcus was mentioned, along with the unborn David.

I love the expression on Uhura's face when the music starts to play, it was like "WTF, here it comes."

That Klingon KPop act was hilarious. Even the TOS original end credit theme song made it.
I was smiling and giggling through the entire episode. What a fun and silly episode.

Here's Uhura's song in TOS.

I think we should avoid being too reductive about what Star Trek is or isn't. As I always say, the great thing about Star Trek is that the format is broad enough to encompass lots of different kinds of stories: high-concept SF, courtroom dramas, murder mysteries, tragic love stories, topical allegories, morality plays, war stories, espionage stories, comedies, and maybe even a musical or two?

That STAR TREK is a big umbrella is a feature, not a bug. It can do light-hearted and whimsical ("Shore Leave") or dark and searing ("In the Pale Moonlight"), and everything in-between. God forbid Trek hit the same notes week after week without variation.

And let's not be too dismissive of "fun." Star Trek's supposed to be fun and entertaining, as well as high-minded and inspirational. Going all the way back to TOS.

It’s just a missed opportunity.
The right place in Trek for a musical episode was season six or seven of TNG, with Q and Lwxana Troi, and everyone, deep down, knows that.

A musical with Q is insufferable. No, thanks.

Exactly. And now it is back at a place where if an episode doesn't work next week could work.

Not all Trek is for all people. It's ok to not like sn installment.

Ah, so that's when this was filmed...

With the anomaly affecting the whole fleet, it amuses me to think that Bones was probably singing his heart out about being a Doctor, not a broadway star.

I never thought of that! Brilliant!

I gave this episode a 4. It just seemed far too ridiculous for Star Trek.

As I stated before some of the songs were not only pretty good, but well sung.

I just wish make the humour a little more Kirk/Spock/McCoy. A little more subtle, a little more personal but in a way that you kid your friends.
I am afraid that this show is heading down the dead-end road that will kill this series. I hope it doesn’t. I hope that the drama/humor comes a little more out of the situation. Like I said - subtle.
