Didn't work for me at all but no issues with them trying it. Must have been a ton of work, especially for the autotune team.

Carol is probably already infuriated that Kirk can't stay home long enough to spend time with her. By the time David is born about a year later she was probably ready to give him the ultimatum...or even tell him to leave her and David be so at least one responsible parent could raise their child.

I hope this episode helps normalize bursting into song wherever you are. That energy would be awesome!
I have at work a couple of times. One time, when I started belting "Wooly Bully" like Pavarotti freaked out my Graphics team. During the pandemic, I was working in the office and one of my coworkers stopped by, and I started singing "I'm All Alone" from Spamalot at him.

That was really childish, especially that 'grand finale' that came off like it was a PBS kids afterschool special.

However, I'll give them props for actually going there. For what this episode aimed to do, it did it.

This board tends to give out 10s for everything, even Discovery, but I think this episode will also play well with the larger current Trek fanbase. The majority of them seem like the types that would enjoy Rent and contemporary 'musicals' like it.

Personally, I thought this one was really cringy. However, objectively, I'll give them a 10 for effort.
10s don't mean perfect, but I've given out few 10s in any grading I've done here. When Discovery gets them they earn them like any other show, probably morseo than anyTerryTrek yet seen unfortunately.

I'm kinda worried they're setting up Captain Batel to be killed in the finale.

Giving her a first name, and then sending her off on a Priority 1 mission when her and Pike were about to go off on their first vacation as a couple hits a lot of trope alarm bells.

Pike has enough trauma already!

I hate musicals. This was a musical. But - It was well done, I liked how they tied the lyrics into the epsiode's story as well as the character's arcs.

Laughed - out loud - at the Klingon boy band.

Characters were developed, a plot was pursued, a problem was solved.

The writing continues to amaze me. Notice the tie in to Ad Astra Per Aspera where Spock said Una's secret was a love of Gilbert and Sullivan? And here she is singing it!

We finally know Batel's first name.

I fully expected to rate this a 2 or 3 beforehand, but I was surprised. I'll give it a 6. I might even watch it a second time.

I feel like the Klingon bit ruined the gravitas if that moment for me. I’m actually a little surprised I feel like the only one who thought this. Not a bad thing, but I guess I’m in a minority on that one.

Nah, the Klingon bit fell flat for me too. The side dancers looked/felt too much like generic gifs/animated clipart pasted in the margins of the viewscreen. They should have went for Oprah for the Klingons. It makes sense they would simg in a manner they're acustomed to.

I suppose it depends on the definition of cringe. I did musical theater for years. Its something I love and until I made the choice to give it up, it was a passion of mine. (Its still something I enjoy but with a wife and two kids and a job that I love, it is not a priority in my world.) I appreciate the fact that the episode had a big wheel of cheese with it that's inherent with musicals. I don't deny that for a second.

But I've seen cringey shit on the stage.
I've been in cringey shit on the stage.
I don't know that I would call this cringeworthy.

But as with anything, to each their own.
Exactly. Honestly, being "cringey" is pretty difficult in a musical if you're accepting it in good faith. For some people, the act of singing alone produces cringe, but their discomfort does not a bad musical make. Speaking of good faith, I offered a bag of Skittles to the Messiah during our high school production of Godspell.

I believe my line was "Good day, Jesus, would you care to taste the rainbow?"

I really hope they subvert the trope but they probably won't.
