Pike's a mench and all, but he's destroying a major bit of Starfleet infrastructure on the word of an ensign that it's all been figured out, with no corroborating evidence. No command structure in the world would work like this, and it wouldn't have taken more than a few additional lines to "fix" the issue via some technobabble regarding having the ship detect the aliens.
Pike does ask Kirk to confirm, so they're not entirely going off Uhura.

That's sort of how I pictured Kirk meeting Spock and Uhura. Just random, normal events that had no immediate significance. No bluster. No lines like: "you seem like a solid kinda Starfleet officer and I hope I have someone like you on my ship one day." Just handshakes, normal dialogue and casual drinks.

I'm going to say the same thing about this episode as I said about the Tomorrow episode. Why is Kirk here? I feel like the writers have already abandoned the idea that this show was supposed to be the adventures of Pike and Crew and Kirk is just in the way. Why couldn't this be an Uhura and M'Benga episode, or a Uhura and Pike episode? I liked the idea of aliens in the Deuterium (Even though it reminded me a little of TNG's Force of Nature, or as fans fondly refer to it, as the Warp limit episode) and the revelation was actually pretty well done. However, for Hemmer's return and just this episode as a whole, Kirk didn't need to be there and I'm already getting a little tired of Wesley's portrayal..

THIS x 1000! WE DON'T NEED TO SEE KIRK EVER AGAIN IN THIS SERIES!

I swear, Kirk has gotten more screen time this season than Pike!

Kirk: Seriously doc? Your sickbay is so unsecured that dangerous hallucinating patients just run off? And I checked your file, this is not the first time this has happened. Dr. Mark Piper on the Farragut would never make such a mistake.

M'Benga: :(

Kirk: you seem like a sloppy kinda Starfleet officer and I'm not sure I hope I have someone like you on my ship one day.

Aww, he brought Dr. Piper with him. That's sweet.

Also, Kirk's future CMO injects himself and escapes in a psychotic break. So...should have kept Piper.

People kept telling me that Kirk wasn't a problem.

Hmmm...

To some degree. Bob Orci said that he believed that Kirk and Spock's first meeting was also after Kirk cheated on the Kobyashi Maru at the Academy in the Prime Timeline. Yet as Spock and Kirk make no reference to such a meeting in this episode and act like they never met before, this is clearly not the case.

Yes. If Kirk is moving up to XO of the Farragut then the implication is that he has already been back to Starfleet Academy for Command School, taken the Kobayashi Maru test, and served as an instructor. (hence Gary Mitchell's quip in WNMHGB: in Lieutenant Kirk's class, you think or you sink) It's pretty unreasonable to think that Spock and he would have intersected before now, except by pure random chance. As soon as Kirk takes over as XO, he'll probably be promoting to LCDR, depending on how big the Farragut is.

That's true, except Spock says he remembers how Kirk cheated on the Kobayashi Maru in Wrath of Khan with the implication that he was there for that (or at the very least heard about it at the time it happened). Now that line will have to be retconned into Kirk describing how he cheated to Spock years after the fact.

Tarsus IV should've been mentioned if at least only between the Kirk brothers. James has angst about being shuttled from place to place as a kid because of his dad's job. He probably would resent his dad for getting him in the middle of that massacre. Yet James seemed to be defending him to Sam
It should, but not necessarily in this episode.
Jim’s resentment seems to be for the times George was away, not the moving. As an Air Force brat, I can relate. We moved several times as a kid and there were times when my father was away for long periods on TDY (temporary duty). My brother who was just an infant when my father started a TDY assignment didn’t even know who he was when came home.

The line is ambiguous:
SPOCK: The Kobayashi Maru scenario frequently wreaks havoc with students and equipment. As I recall you took the test three times yourself. Your final solution was, shall we say, unique?

So I guess interpretation is the name of the game. Or, perhaps, translation ;)

Did anyone else figure out after the first few times Uhura heard the droning sound that it was clearly some alien species trying to communicate with her? Maybe the episode title gave it away too much, but I felt a little let down by what I feel like was supposed to be a surprise. When she and The Kirk Bros. figured it out I was just like, "Well, duh." Otherwise, it was a solid episode and very much in keeping with the best traditions of Trek.

Yeah, I thought that was pretty evident from the get-go.

Sam was being totally unreasonable and had no legitimate reason to be mad at Jim. Was he supposed to hold himself back so he wouldn't make his brother look bad? That's silly. The mention of George Kirk being XO of the Kelvin was neat, though.

I'm not loving this whole thing of having Sam Kirk on the Enterprise. We don't need to see Jim Kirk in this series IMHO, so we definitely don't need his brother either, who showed up already deceased in a single episode of TOS. To me this was always an odd choice on the part of the show-runners.

Kinda wish we had seen Kirk and La'an share that drink. But seeing him meet Pike (per canon, when he was promoted to Fleet Captain. That was well done) and meet Spock were really cool moments.

Inasmuch as we don't need to see Kirk EVER AGAIN on this show, letting go the whole La'an thing seems like a good move. I did think the Spock / Kirk handshake was kinda neat.

He was a gateway Kirk.

La'an: Spock, fancy seeing you here. What are you doing here?

Spock: Christine dumped me. She is now engaged to Roger Korby.

La'an: You think you have it bad Spock? Jim dumped me, for that blonde lab tech Carol Marcus. I swear it's that Gary Mitchell jerk who had something to do with it. Christine's engaged to someone else, Spock? I have it worse. Carol's having Jim's kid!! :wah:

Spock: We are now partaking in the human custom that Captain Pike described to me as commiserating.

La'an: Well Spock, seeing as how we're both single now maybe we should...

(communicator chimes)

Leila: Spock, it's Leila Kalomi, don't keep me waiting, you said you'd beam down here for our date.

La'an: You've got to be kidding me!

Really, that bar with the giant chandelier compared to the horrid break room where they played cards, or whatever.

This is something I've contemplated a bit. The TOS Enterprise was very reminiscent of naval vessels in terms of its looks and feels- there wasn't much in the way of recreation facilities, and the accoutrements were pretty uniform and drab. However, as McCoy, Kirk, and others often alluded to in conversation, starfleet was "the service". No frills. I often wonder how long I'd survive aboard the TOS Enterprise before wanting to stab myself in the guts with a dull knife. How much worse was it on smaller starfleet vessels?

So, realistically speaking, then, it does make sense that a starship exploring the Big Black would have some 'cruise ship' elements to it in terms of recreation facilities, especially if it was expected to take on years-long missions with limited opportunities for shore leave or returning home. The bar / lounge is nice, but maybe just a little OTT? Are those musicians civilians, or off-duty personnel? What about the bartender? In this era there were not supposed to be civilians aboard starfleet vessels, right?

It also seems that things like VR, holodecks, and other distractions would be available in the 23rd Century. You'd definitely need something to stop the crew from climbing the walls after a few months underway with no breaks, especially when you consider that even with warp drive, transits between systems could take weeks or even months.

Two things can be true. Kirk isn’t a problem and the scene talking about death was a good one. However, I think M’benga could have still delivered the same line with the same gravitas as Kirk did. My issue really isn’t the episode itself but more the feeling that they sidelined Pike for Pikes successor. Yes I know Mount added to his family and I don’t know the scheduling but season 2 is almost over and Pike still feels sidelined. I didn’t want another original series with Kirk and Spock. I wanted Pike and Spock.

What a terrific episode. I love it when Uhura gets the spotlight, and Celia Gooding does such a wonderful job with growing her character. I already liked Paul Wesley's Kirk, but he keeps growing on me. I enjoyed the interactions between Jim and Sam, you've got to love sibling rivalry.

The story was well done, very Trekkian, and I loved the visuals inside the deuterium gas cloud, the collector, and the ships themselves, the interactions between Una and Pelia were terrific, and I'm so glad Carol Kane is on this show now.

All in all, another very well done episode. My one regret is that there are only 10 episodes in a season.

TAS is basically broad strokes canon especially due to the specific references to Spock 2 in Lower Decks. We know there was a holodeck-style rec room in the 1701 per TAS. It probably wouldn't hurt canon too much to have this room show up in SNW.

I wanted Pike as well. But, as soon as Kirk is introduced this is exactly what I expected to happen.

What canon? I believe SNW has trampled all over it canon at this point, or so I've been told.

I think they introduced Kirk too early. I wouldn’t have minded if it was the final season and they introduced him and then the last episode we see Pike in the chair. Not sure what the timeline is for that but that is what set up this show.

Another thing, does Spock and Pike ever talk to each other anymore? I want to know why Spock would risk his life and career for him by taking him back to Talos IV. That could have been an undercurrent theme in this series and we really haven’t seen it.
