This might be a bit gushing, but I'm really happy with this episode, season and show in general. For me at least, it's like being a fan back in the 90s again, having a fun time watching and looking forward to new episodes and wondering what's coming up. There's just that right blend of serious, funny, silly, and wondrous elements that made me a fan in the first place.

As for this particular episode, it's probably not my absolute favorite of the season because I had the plot mostly figured out ahead of time, but the way they got there was great. It's not a bad story in any way, just a little bit predictable.

What made it work so well though, was that the plot was a great way of exploring the characters. The Kirk-Uhura interactions were really engaging, as was the sections where Uhura is reminiscing about Hemmer. You really get the feeling of loss coming from Gooding when she watches the tutorial video (as an aside, it's so nice to see the Enterprise depicted as a proper machine that needs tons of training to operate. It's something that has been lost in recent years where everything just felt a little bit too techno-magic). And Kirk's speech about fighting against death and loss was just classic Kirk.

Again, all that serious stuff is balanced with occasional humor; Sam's 'you go back to your little ship, whilst I'm on the flagship!' had me laughing out loud.

Looking forward to next week's episode. I can't get into Lower Decks for some reason, but I imagine this crossover will at least be interesting!

I really liked it. It was a good episode for further building up Uhura's character. Plus, I loved their solution for the first meeting between Pike and Kirk. That should hopefully keep the hounds at bay for this week.

Further, I'm starting to really dig Paul Wesley's Kirk. With each appearance I find he is getting closer and closer to the Kirk we know, without it being an impression. And we managed to get a bunch of references to the Kelvin! Always a plus.

I freaking love this series.

Yeah me too, but I can't really figure out why though. On the face of it (literally),he doesn't look remotely Kirk-like, and I'm not getting any of the mannerisms that would be reminiscent, and yet there is this vibe that I'm buying into that sells the character. There's probably something in the 'never say die' attitude and the thoughtful yet risk-taking tactician stuff that's coming through?

I really liked this episode but it's not their best this season and that's not due to the cast. The cast are fantastic. It's from having watched this sceneraio play out in every iteration of Trek since it's inception, the Alien we can't see and we're killing them episode. I guessed it about 5 minutes in.

That being said, it has that SNW play on it that still works and is entertaining. Wesley's Kirk has grown on me, Uhura was great, and that little toss out to last week's episode on Spock and Sam was *chef's kiss*

Okay so I am feel bad saying this. But UGH this was terrible. Probably the worst one. I am giving it a 6 only because the episode had some touching moments with Hemmer. But honestly this was nothing more than Night Terrors part 2. I get there is a lot of content that TNG,DS9 and VOY has done, but seriously this was a 90s trek episode.

Sorry to be a downer.

Another solid episode for me. Some nice banter between Jim and Sam, with Wesley doing a nice job as Jim Kirk. You can see the foundation of what he will evolve into by TOS. I kind of teared up at the end, with the introduction. The plot has a very sci-fi foundation, with a Star Trek style that has been woven throughout TOS and onward. I really enjoyed it.

So is Sam married yet? Or have any of the kids later killed in Operation Annihilate? Seems strange if they're not mentioned.

Jim tells La'an how he spent his childhood going from posting to posting because of his dad. Would've been a good time to mention the Tarsus IV massacre in there.
