If they were turning him into a 8-year-old totally human Spock I would agree with you; but this really is probably nothing like TNG S6 Rascals which was a horrible episode IMO.

This is actually one of the more sensible Trek missions. Fly the shuttlecraft up to the strange energy anomaly, rather than the ship itself.

Of course, it's just a plot contrivance.
