It doesn't harm them, though, to make the two looks part of the same species. In fact it adds tension to Illyrians' relationships with outsiders since humans once boarded and robbed one of their peaceful vessels, stole engine components and left the Illyrian crew stranded in one of the most notorious regions of known space and subject to some horrible variations in the laws of physics. "Humans betrayed us during our very first meeting and now you want me to just take their word that you'll be treated fairly or even acquitted?"

Yeah. I mean, that's a part of Trek, but any generic sci-fi show will have those. What sets Trek apart IMHO is that it's didactic storytelling. Not always political per-se, but a fair amount of the time, you're supposed to come away from an episode having been explicitly taught a moral lesson.

We saw one in Measure of the Man, though it did seem to disappear after that.

But here's my question: They didn't even mention the name of the aliens in the ENT episode. It only came from the script. Conversely, the novel "Vulcan's Glory" explicitly mentioned that Number One was a human raised by the Illyrians. That was clearly where the writers got that race name. So it makes no sense to me to link the two, regardless of what their 'rules' are. That's all I'm saying.

I mean, I suppose it's possible the Illyrians use gene therapy only on targeted organs, rather than letting the modifications get into their gametes and pass on to the next generation. Though this is a way more complicated way to do it, so I'm not sure why they'd bother.

Not to mention La'an is explicitly noted in this episode to be a direct descendant of Khan, to have his genes yet...somehow she's not an augment? I guess because it's a bit diluted after centuries?

I kind of wish there was a better reason for the augmentations other than "my parents did it to me". Like I'm not even sure if Una is against the practice herself and would be against augmenting her own kids.

loved this episode. Right up there with TNG's Measure of a Man.

The only thing I didn't like: Given Starfleet officers' penchant for memorizing and citing Starfleet regulations and laws that pertain to them, I'm surprised none of the crew came up with the amnesty angle. I can overlook it, though, since it might more reasonably be similar to expecting a U.S. Naval officer to know immigration law (although I bet they know quite a bit about it).
