The episode had two tropes I hate:
* the drinking game
* something happen in my past, but I don't have to go into it now

I am not interested in Pelia. She is a character with a mystery box past. Mystery boxes should be hanged, drawn, and quartered. It has become so obnoxious that now there is talk about re-doing the ending of The Empire Strikes Back, so we, the audience, can know how Luke's lightsaber got into the possession of the alien lady in The Force Awakens and how his hand had a role in the plots of evil people in the Star Wars universe. This is so they can answer the mystery boxes that have came up in the past or will come up in the future.
is she a mystery box? We know she's Lanthanite, lived on Earth, connected to Amanda, and has a science teaching background

I feel like if she was mystery box, they wouldn't have revealed those details. She seems like any other character

Well the trailers have shown we'll see the Klingons again, so maybe we will.

Pre-TOS spock has always been emotional.

I disagree.

Discovery missed 99% of the war remember. It was probably created while they were time displaced.
And Dialogue in this episode implied it had been used before.

I never asked for you, or anyone else to agree with me or not. I simply expressed how I felt about the episode, etc. It's debatable about pre-TOS Spock always being emotional. Further, name for me the times when we've seen Prime Spock speak to an admiral that way? Discovery missed chunks of the war, but still fought in the war as well as helped end it. Enterprise did not fight in the war at all, albeit some of its crew members did. As for the stimulant we don't know what's its story is until its explained on the series, or by one of the writers, and it might be a deal where it never shows up again and just becomes one of those Trek mysteries.

Ilia wasn't all that deep but I was fascinated to see where her character went in the film.

I can't get my head properly around the idea of measuring my enjoyment of something based on a ration of 'good' Canon boxes and 'bad' Canon boxes ticked.

TOS created concepts all the time with absolutely zero intention of 'explaining something in a later episode'. All the better for it.

M'Benga was nothing in TOS. A background, token character who most casual viewers would most likely blink and miss. TOS Chapel divided her time between mooning forlornly through bouts of unrequited love and handing McCoy stuff.

The first is a blank slate. The second needed wiping for a 21st Century audience. Like, seriously, needed it.

Canon be damned. They are telling great stories, with great characters. SNW is what I always imagine TOS is in my head, until I put an actual episode of TOS on and find myself affectionately smiling as it creaks.

SNW is Roddenberry's Vision in its purest form.

She's passed on! This Deltan is no more! She has ceased to be! 'She's expired and gone to meet her maker! She's a stiff! Bereft of life, She rests in peace! If you hadn't nailed 'er to the perch she'd be pushing up the daisies! 'Er metabolic processes are now 'istory! 'She's off the twig! 'She's kicked the bucket, She's shuffled off 'er mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisible!! THIS IS AN EX-NAVIGATOR!!
Robo-Ilia on the other hand....

I mean…it’s way too early to say she’s nothing special or not interesting. Let’s explore the character for more than the 5 minutes she was on screen.

in the end you may be right but…patience.
This season is on a very short leash for me.

So, no.

it is likely the K/S shippers but why are people now insisting chapel has more chemistry with Mengba and she has zero chemistry with spock. that is such a change from season 1. I see so many backlash with spock/chapel on twitter and tumblr.

I look more forward to episode 5 which is said to be the boiling point episode of the spock/chapel/tpring love triangle and likely the kiss from the trailer.

Chapel & M'Benga are obvious colleagues and friends with somewhat of an unknown history (at this juncture) between them, there's nothing sexual about their relationship.
I see no change between season 1 & 2 as far as they are concerned.

sometime people just see what they want to see with people and maybe tumblr and twitter just hate the spock and chapel stuff? I think a lot of their annoyance comes from the fact they cannot reconcile the same characters from TOS. I see many post of them LMAO are chapel kicking Klingon ass and spock crying over a woman he flung a soup at in TOS. overall response to this episode has been mixed, I am still reading the reviews online.

What I may have suggested is maybe this episode should have been like an episode 7, its like they want to rush the spock/chapel stuff and cover all the grounds by the first half of the show. i heard from the synopsis that episode 5 ''Charades'' will bring some kind of resolution to the spock/chapel/tpring stuff. I can't wait to see how that turns out given spock never broke it off with tpring in amok time.

Wrong. We never saw him make gunpowder before. If he could do that, Gary Mitchell would have mentioned it. Captains aren't chemists. It was out of character.

If they wanted Kirk inventing gunpowder they should have made him a new character instead of doing violence to an existing one.
Just like they ruined Picard by having him be a horse-riding enthusiast and fencer.

Regarding the new engineer and M'Benga's emergency super-soldier serum, I'm bemused by the idea that it's somehow mysterious or bad writing if a brand-new character or gimmick is not immediately accompanied by a complete biography, backstory, and/or lengthy info dump. Since when are we supposed to know all about a new character or plot device the moment it's introduced?

"Hey, who is this Chekov dude? Where did he come from all of sudden? What's his story? What did he study at the academy? What are his combat skills like? Does he have first name? A brother? They can't just throw a new character into the mix without telling us all about him. Damn mystery boxes! I swear, they're just making this stuff up as they go along!

"And don't get me started on Vulcans suddenly being able to do nerve pinches and mind-melds just because the plot requires it. Talk about lazy writing!" :)

Yeah, and it would be unnecessarily mannered to introduce every "gimmick" as a Chekhov's Gun - that is to say, to have some conversation or incident establish the existence of Starfleet Speed prior to the need to use it. Dramatically speaking, when would you expect the characters to talk about this stuff? When they need to use it, if at all. That's when. It's something they'd take for granted.
