This episode just added further proof that Hemmer is possibly my favourite SNW character, and I am still just not warming to Ethan Peck at all.

It was a point of contention. Apparently writing a fantasy book for children goes against everything Benny Russell stands for.

Well that's nonsense.

After all Roald Dahl wrote tales of the unexpected but was known for his kids books.

Hell, even John Grisham has written kids books.

But I'm more interested in what it means in universe. So benny was a real person in universe....but clearly couldn't have written Deep Space Nine?!

Russell's version of "Deep Space Nine" was never published. And no one outside of the offices of Incredible Tales ever read it. So it's something that few people, if any in the 24th Century would be aware of.

The story had no build. M'Benga didn't go through any events or challenges to prepare him for the decision he had to make. It was just a mystery box of "what's going on?" with a telegraphed, abrupt and too-quickly arrived at decision tacked on at the end.

Plus, I hate dress up episodes.

YMMV.

Maybe his *real* accent is the Nigerian accent but he has to put on a posh accent like Gillian Andersen does to get jobs in Hollywood?
I mean it's possible, but as mentioned earlier on this thread you kind of think he'd be using his real accent in his hobbies like martial arts: (216) Brazilian Jiu Jitsu w/ Babs Olusanmokun | Jiu Jitsu - YouTube

Section 31's had Benny's unpublished DS9 stories in their vaults for centuries. Sisko was assigned to DS9 precisely because it's what happened in the stories Section 31 was holding onto.

I have no issue understanding M'Benga but then I've been listening to different TV character accents for so many decades that I can get 95% of them with few if any problems. It's like deep Southern U.S. accents or really thick Liverpool or Scottish accents in the UK that sometimes have subtitles on the screen. I get it. But I very rarely need it.

He did an interview in this week’s ready room and he sounded the same to me

People moaning about accents is so incredibly American.
Ye can be such a strange bunch when it comes to stuff like this.

His "Trek" accent is a little too much. It is hard to understand him. I thought that was him, but he was on the Ready Room, still had an accent but way less than the show.

It's not. The person I watch Trek with is Russian, raised in Russia, and she didn't like Dr. Who initially because she can't get around the British accent, having taught herself English via the American way of talking.

Considering a preponderance of evidence, from Babs' acting interviews and martial arts videos, seems to indicate how he talks is not like M'Benga's, I'm now wondering who decided to give M'Benga the accent? Babs? The showrunners? Babs ran with the accent in audition and the director thought it was so cool?

Are you sure? Let me help. He was dressed like this:

I mean, I was warmed up.

And M'Benga never asked about the possibility of carrying elements of Debra (the nebula) with them, assuming that it was possible, so that Rukiya will be healed in the normal world and she won't have to leave her friend entirely behind. The idea that he can only choose to either restore the ship to normal or to let Rukiya be healthy is fairly silly, as presented. YMMV, of course. :)

I have rather mixed feelings overall about the episode, because I feel like the concept was good but it's thrown together rather clumsily. There are a lot of plot elements that don't really work for me, especially parts of the ending, because there should have been more build up to them. I wish the episode had a bit more polish and different execution.
Agreed. It felt like the main purpose of this episode was to give the players something really fun to do while resolving Rukiya's plight. Trouble is, they over-emphasized the "fun fantasy" part at the expense of the Rukiya story, which seemed way to undeveloped to me.

That's why the Entity erased everyone's memory except M'Benga's - and I doubt he'll tell anyone the whole story.
If I had just entrusted my daughter to an alien entity I just met with no independent knowledge of that entity's true nature, I wouldn't tell anybody either.

I think we need to show a little grace to the people having trouble with accents. It seems like any given person will have an easier/harder time with a particular accent based on their linguistic exposure growing up. I personally don't have any problem understanding M'Benga, but I might have trouble with some other accent group.
It's not just about accents. Different people have different abilities to hear at varying level, frequencies, etc. It also changes with age. In my case, overly assertive background music/sounds can make speech harder to distinguish. Add to that technical differences in the sound devices (TV speakers, sound bars, PC speakers, home theater setups, etc.) can either enhance or disrupt the sound clarity.

This also made me think of the Seinfeld episode about the woman no one could hear speak.
