Star Trek: Starships Model/Magazine Subscription

I honestly am not sure I want this one. It's a bit silly as I don't think the logos were in the episode to begins with.

One thing I never understood about the (pre-assimilation) "Arctic Explorer" vessel is that it had a stylized map of Antarctica painted on it. Wrong pole.
I would assume that most of its history was providing services to the southern pole.

When I still lived in Alaska you could see private and commercial planes that had logos of other regions, usually being where they were from before being purchased or routed for Alaskan work.

Got an email yesterday about my next shipment. A couple more ships are staggered making it so I'm missing four that have been "back-ordered" for months now (85, 88, 89, 93). Still can't understand how online shops have some of these models in before those of us with the initial subscription, but what can I do but wait? Out of all 4 of them, the only one I really am upset about is the Enterprise J. As the final Enterprise in the collection it was a milestone for my collection. Hopefully those four get back in stock and shipped to me by the end of the year at least.
A long time ago I worked for a catalog company, and our position between orders for shops versus orders for individuals is that shops got priority. They order more per order then individuals. Individuals ordered usually due to lack of easy shop access (thus you were very likely to keep their business when delays or other issues popped up). And individual orders weren't usually spur of the moment purchases. A shop orders for their regular customers but might order extra for someone making an impulse buy. An impulse buy could turn into a regular buyer (either in shop or catalog). If shop doesn't have extra very unlikely to have an impulse buyer, let alone an impulse buyer who then turns into a regular buyer.

I popped into my local store today and picked up the New Orleans. I only had a little over half an hour between getting home and heading off
to work, so that left me very little time to look at it or do more than skim quickly through the magazine.

Obviously, I'll look it over more when I get home, but I saw enough to remark at what a weird-looking ship it is. I'm still curious what those markers they stuck on the top and bottom are supposed to be (sensor pods, I would assume).

Still, it's a nice-looking ship. Along with the Cheyenne, they're really the only two "Wolf 359" ships that aren't really an eyesore.

Same procedure as with the ISS Enterprise NCC-1701: the original representation was beefed up with the insignia from "In A Mirror, Darkly", to render the model more interesting. I'm cool with that.

The New Orleans ends up looking a little more streamlined if you remove the bottom pod. It can be reattached. As for their purpose, the magazine avoids speculating, but your assumption that they might be sensor pods seems reasonable. Or they could be mission(-specific) pods, like the Nebula and Saratoga have.

Yeah but the nacelles were different on the ISS - E this is just an insignia for a ship that didn't even have the insignia.

Repaints are the bane of collectors' existence. They're not always accurate (like ISS Defiant and Enterprise) but they exploit the collector's need for a complete set.

It's not silly, it makes no sense. Why would a group of resistance fighters from various races (we see at least three Humans, Trills, and Vulcans) adopt the Terran Empire signage, after all that was a brutal totalitarian government was well.

I don't mind SOME repaints at some point. I think it's better than doing a "battle damaged" version of an existing ship (I hate those). Technically, the Micro Machine Saratoga was just the Reliant with a slightly different color and no roll bar (but also no pods). Johnny Lightning released the Yamato (which, unlike the "D", did not separate, for some reason) and the Connie-class Defiant and Excalibur. The latter two would've been exciting, if they hadn't done such a terrible job on the Connie.

There's a lot of ships I'd like to see them cover first, however.

Yeah, it's stupid. Feels like they just wanted to reissue the Defiant because it was popular. I'd rather they just relabelled it Sao Paulo or Valiant.

Problem is, the ISS Defiant is a notable ship - but the original model sans labels is not distinctive enough. Hence the paintjob/extra logos.

Plus, it's a separate line, so anyone can skip it. Personally, I'm excited!

But it never was the "ISS" Defiant, that's the point. Just seems odd to do when there are plenty of other canon ships they can do.

I think technically, there's a display on the bridge in "Shattered Mirror" calling it the "ISS Defiant", but they certainly never made any exterior changes for the model, the way the would for the NX-01's counterpart or the remastered mirror 1701.

My guess would be some Terran rebel with some knowledge of history got the idea to call it that, hearkening back to the days when Terrans were on top (never mind that the Terran Empire was presumably just as bad as the Alliance, if not worse).

It's not a model I'm terribly interested in. I already have a Defiant, thank you very much.

In the novels, Smiley O'Brien is closer aligned with prime Starfleet ideals, but Generals Bashir and Zek harken back to the days of the Empire. When they start producing more Defiants, they feature full Imperial livery. The rebellion starts branching. In contrast, Smiley's ship becomes the free starship Defiant. :vulcan:

In STO, the Empire is reborn in full purple/yellow/red livery glory. You should see the ISS Enterprise-F holding its own against the USS Enterprise-J!

Oh yeah!
Are you a subscriber or did you just order this on the website when it came up for pre-order? As I did the latter but haven't recieved it yet. Then again I suppose I didn't order it straight away so maybe they're working through a list or something

I was it in my local WHSmith, in a little section they have for all these monthly collectable collection thingies. I wasn't expecting it to be there, and freaked out when I saw it because I only had a fiver on me (I was on my way to work), but a work friend's husband lent me what I needed and I was sorted.

That's awesome. I've looked in my local Smith's and never found one! Well done. I ordered from the site and I am still waiting.
