Star Trek: Starships Model/Magazine Subscription

I'm missing 4 ships in total from over the last 3 months. What's really weird is that they keep telling me "on back-order" whenever I call. I was in the first group of American pre-ordered subscriptions from before the series started shipping and am located in one of the states where they are warehousing and shipping to American subscribers from (Pennsylvania) and because of that I have to pay state sales-tax too. Shouldn't they have manufactured more than the subscriber number? They have a literal number that should technically be a minimum manufacturing number. Shouldn't that theoretically mean that I'm first subscribed, first served and if I don't get a ship from my subscription, no American being shipped from the PA warehouse does?

PA represent! My story is much the same as yours. Early subscriber, in at the beginning. I got fed up with my shipments being late and "not-in-stock" while my local comic book store kept getting the SAME ships reliably, at least a week or two before my shipments came - often earlier.

So I cancelled my subscription and started pre-ordering through my local retailer using Diamond's "Previews" catalog. There were a couple hiccups during the transition (because you pre-order 2-3 months in advance, and I had neglected to start ordering before I cancelled my subscription because I did it spur-of-the-moment out of frustration), but since the ships I pre-ordered have started to come in, I've received everything on time - and apparently shipped with greater care than my UPS delivery guy does.

I've been trying to get an Eaglemoss Second Doctor figurine for almost a year, too. Never in stock at their store. The American store is absolute CRAP about restocking.

I headed over to my local shop and bought the Romulan scout yesterday.

I justified it a bit by taking my bike over to get a bit of exercise (though I think the stop at Burger King might've undermined that a bit).

It's length-to-width ratio means that we get a fairly big model (not quite the size of the Enterprise-C). This one has very little metal, though.

I ended up pulling out my TNG blu-ray and rewatching "The Defector" so I could compare it. It's not perfect (you can't really capture that "lit from inside" look that the windows on the real ship had) but pretty good.

I don't understand why this seems so odd for people. If you have a business that features two types of customers. (1) Subscribers or (2) retail and other internet stores, the retail outlet is going to get priority (if their is a supply issue).

A subscriber is a customer that is going to be long term. Someone who wants the product being made. Those type of customer are those that are more willing to put up with a hiccup every now and then. They are also generally going to order one ship of each model.

Then you have the physical stores and Internet shops. Each retailer is a business that makes multiple orders of each models (could be a few could be dozens). Retail stores need stock on hand, in fact they need more stock on hand then what they have regular customers for, because they have random people that come in and window shop.

For retailers that can be a huge factor. You can get someone who might never have heard of a product see something that they like who turns into a long time customer (either through that specific store or who becomes a subscriber directly). Both are huge wins for Eaglemoss.

Random and casual buyers are the customers who are most likely to discontinue purchasing a product all together.

With subscribers you get people who will put up with delays, and when they finally decide enough is enough, often their first choice is trying to switch from subscription to stores or online purchases, and that it is still a win for Eaglemoss. Heck even going From being a subscriber to just an occasional buyer isn't a complete loss for Eaglemoss.

And as for supply, since Eaglemoss is a relatively small company, I am sure they try and keep their production line relatively tight. Enough to cover subs, shops, and a certain level of stock for them to sell through their online store.

And if you do then you are going to run into 2 issues that will sometimes cut seriously into supply. As a production run for a model is started much earlier then stores pre purchase, and the subscribers numbers can change (both + and -) each month if a production run has a higher rate of failure that is going to cut into what can go out. And if orders for specific models is dramatically higher then anticipated, that its also going to cut into can go out.

I am actually surprised how few issues I have had with getting ships, though admittedly my final subscription that started like 2 full year after the collection started is the one that has featured the most delays, but they have eventually got every ship that I ordered.

The one thing that they are still behind for me is binders, and they are way behind here. I ordered them with my first and 3rd subscription , and they just recently got them caught up with my 1st (it was almost 2 years behind schedule), my 3rd I finally cancelled, and just switched to their premium ones, which I actually like, but hate paying more for.

As someone who works in hospitality/customer service the reality is the vast majority of people out there will think of things from their perspective only. Even after explaining to them why a service or product they have asked for cannot be provided for them exactly the way they want it will usually not matter.

We finally got a look at the Jenolan model. I'm really looking forward to this one. You can see it here.

I'm admittedly a little iffy about the picture, but a lot of people (myself included) felt the same way when we first saw the pic of the Breen ship and that one turned out great.

Advertising mega-sales when half your product line is out of stock is, I'm sure, also just good business practice.

If you're the kind of company that ends up starring in stories on NotAlwaysWorking.com

I always figures I was late to the party and the popular ones had been sold already...

i am still disappointed in the Breen ship though- it is too small and the metal features look soft and blurry when compared to the plastic version of the same part is right next to it. I know people like the 'heft' of the diecast, but I do wish they would just go all plastic because it has so much sharper detail.

Lets us know if you like the designing books, I am thinking about it, but still unsure.

They are great, I finished Vol. 1 yesterday and they are packed with sketches, photos, renderings and Information. In their presentation the books are very comparable with the old "The Art of Star Trek" and some content is familar. Of course if you collect the starships you will know almost every content of the book as they are a collection of the design articles from the issues. But there are also aditional content like articles to the shuttles, die Phase II and Planet of the Titans Enterprise (Vol.1) or V'Ger (Vol.2) and some new pictures. So for someone who doesn't buy the ships or has only a few of them the books are a good way to get information from the other issues.

As almost no klingon ships are featured in the two books I gues there will be at least a third book. In the first two books there is also no content from the special editions but I think that's understandable as the design articles in that issues are very extensive.

Squee!
If I had to guess I'd say they picked the NCC-1031 and NCC-1227.

Btw, the discount includes the Shuttle Set 2 as well.

Photo available of USS Jenolan NCC-2010 - A Space Ody...oh wait. Anyway, link: https://vignette4.wikia.nocookie.ne...ision/latest?cb=20170524125430&path-prefix=en

I'm on the wall about the shuttle sets...during the current sale, with the Eaglemoss10 code, I can get them down to £60.75 each. If I sell some of my duplicates due to Eaglemoss' mistakes, I could get each shuttle set down to ~£50, making each shuttle ~£12.50 each. I'm not entirely sure that's worth it. They look nice, and I definitely want the NX-01 Shuttlepod (and once you get one, you have to have the rest - if both the Argo and Insurrection Type 11 Shuttlecraft are in set 3, those are definite winners for me), but...I don't know...still seems like more than they should be.

^ A sensible approach. If you get the per-shuttle price that low in your calculations, then it's probably worth it. They are mostly die-cast. How often have you spent that much money for a Trek model of similar size but plastic (e.g. Furuta, Micro Machines, or Johnny Lightning)?
