I liked Section 31's pre-Federation incarnation in Season 4 of ENT. Since then...nope.

I see Sec 31 as dipping in and out of favor and official consciousness. There is no one way it is perceived.

They had a secret fleet with a well known AI during Discovery then they were taken underground again after that debacle.

Such things happen do a degree with contemporary intelligence services. For example, the CIA operates its own planes, several dozen of them and so on. They sometimes make the news with failed efforts like the Bay of Pigs or Central American fiascos in the 80s, but then tend to remain low and quiet for a time.

Last I heard this was a series idea that had been scrapped.

It was never announced as scrapped.

Every time it's been brought up in Interviews, before the movie announcement, they've constantly said they were still trying to make it.

Development limbo would have been a better term. It may even be in that again with the writers strike going on.

Indeed. I'm always confused by the struggle with "Section 31 is public knowledge and that's not accurate!" Well, Section 31 needs legitimate ways to operate, even if not as official "Section 31", i.e. part of Starfleet Intelligence, or Security. Heck, even in Shatner's novels Starfleet had a wing that was called "Colonial Development" or some other innocuous term but it operated intelligence agents based upon risk.

Section 31 would grow and shrink based upon need and risk, and fall back in to the shadows, slowly erasing archives so that they can operate more freely. The idea that they are never "known" is an odd one, since real world intelligence agencies have both the known and unknown parts of their job to the public.

With Michelle Yeoh's schedule being tied up until 2028, they either find a way to make the movie happen this year or it won't. It's a huge star and huge opportunity for them.

With the WGA strike (and possible SAG/AFTRA strike looming); everything Hollywood related in scripted TV/Streaming or Feature film is on hold right now.

It's what organization the writers are part of. Durung the last strike, STARGATE ATLANTIS, for example, didn't lose any episodes because every writer on their staff (except Carl Binder) was Canadian. Therefore, the strike didn't affect them.

By contrast, in the same year, SUPERNATURAL lost 6 episodes because their entire writing staff was part of the WGA, despite the show being produced in Canada.

Then I wonder why this didn't seem to be the case during the last strike, because while the majority of shows DID lose a number of episodes, several Canadian heavy writer's room shows weren't affected at all or only marginally. (SMALLVILLE lost only 2 episodes in their 7th season, for instance.)

In Stargate's case, it was a Canadian show, and the writers were working under a WGC contract. Continuing to work did not constitute "struck work" for WGC members. (Whereas Carl Binder likely fell into bullet 4 in the above PDF.) The impact on other shows would depend on what agreement the writers were working under.

Exactly, that was my point. The WGC isn't really beholden to the WGA, at least during the last strike. Maybe with the current one they decided they would be.

It's not strictly relevant to the discussion, but Carl Binder is Canadian.

Doesn't mean he wasn't a member of the WGA. I remember during that last strike he had to walk out of Bridge Studios (where the STARGATE shows were produced) because he was a WGA member. I think it had something to do with a rule about where you reside that was the sticking point on why he had to go on strike.
