Star Trek: Renegades

Hey Tom, what can you tell us about the prequel novel (is there a adaptation of the show coming too?)

When is the prequel novel coming out? I like to read prequel books before I watch the movies they're tied into.

Also, where can we get copies?

I wonder if they'll novelise the pilot but with all the Trek references removed? It would make sense as it is Episode 1 to the story!

I have just watched the Requiem part one which is now out for donors.
The fact that they have changed all the Star Trek references, but have done so in a really half arsed way, actually makes it a little comical at times, but in a good way . The episode is really good although a little shorter then I expected at only 25 minutes in length. The acting also feels a little stronger than the pilot. The CGI and music are amazing.

My only concern I have is to whether it is transformative enough for CBS to ignore it

I will wait until everyone has had the chance to see it before I comment further.

Not worried about it, a bunch of people looked at copyright and trademarked elements and removed what was needed. Technically since we were in the middle of shooting when the guidelines came down, even if it remained 'Star Trek' it would have been ok. Of course we did not know that until the Van Critters interview. If, we (hopefully), have future episodes we will obviously move a bit farther away from notable Star Trek aspects.

Glad you liked Part 1! Everything was improved from pilot episode. Part 2 is going be even better!

Loved it loved it loved it. Everything I wanted it to be! Here's to Part 2! And I love a couple of names are in there which made me giggle!

And yes the half-removal to me is great, you would still believe it's a Star Trek movie which I admit I've said all along I've hoped for; all those familiar faces returning - yes with future episodes you'll have more time (like more than literally 24 HOURS!!) to change things up but I think it's changed enough to be OK here. That makes Requiem somewhat a unique oddity, it;'s a bridge from Star Trek Renegades to the new original format.

We only had written guidelines the day you had to change things and JVC had yet to clarify in a podcast. That's OK, you had to make a literal snap decision, all the poeple had days booked in diaries and you spent thousands of fans' money on things - it was either do something or send everyone home.

I was on an airplane flying out to the production when the guidelines were put in place. As soon as the plane landed and my phone was back in service, I got 50 billion texts and emails. LOL We had to scramble, change the script, change the website, make up and sets altered, tons of stuff. Everything settled done eventually. We were happy that we put enough originality into Renegades, that there was not too much to change. We did have many discusions during production of what we could or could not use so we would not violate and copyrights or trademarks.

The prequel novel, the like "The Requiem" has no Star Trek elements.

I can't find it. Do you have a link?

Over in the Renegades Fan Group on Facebook they're talking about (I should stress, this is just talk at this stage with no decisions made) a pay-per-view setup for non-donors to see Renegades: Requiem. It's not Star Trek IP anymore so as much as this sucks as a non-donor I guess they're free to do so if they choose...?

PPV has been discussed, but no decision have been made. If the PPV route were taken it would be a very cheap cost for the viewer. Since this no longer has and copy written elements from Star Trek in it, there is freedom to many things that could not have been done if it were a Star Trek fan film. Right now our main focus is on getting Part 2 done and fulfilling our donor commitments.

Might PPV include a commercial DVD release? I know a company In Englamd who's releasing the old Reeltime Dr Who spinoffs to the high street

Not sure what you mean, DVD and Blu Ray's will be for sale when they are ready and after we send them to our donors who had them as a perk.

From Facebook:

ANNOUNCEMENT!
Part One of The Requiem will be released to the public THIS FRIDAY!
Fantastic. Wasn't thrilled with the idea of them doing Requiem as a PPV, since from the accounts I've seen it's only had the bare minimum of last-minute Trek name scrubbing.

Should their post-Requiem efforts establish more original universe elements (which they've plenty of time to develop as opposed to when doing Requiem), they can do whatever they want with it and it won't feel like a cheat.
