Spoilers Star Trek: Prodigy General Discussion Thread

The studio mandated an end before the creators were ready to end it on their own terms. In my mind, that's a cancellation.

That's a valid position. But at least it's a "soft" cancellation that lets the episodes be aired and adjusted to work as an ending, as opposed to Prodigy's "hard" cancellation by P+ where it was just yanked from the service and would've been buried if someone else hadn't picked it up.

No, actually the decision was made after they were finished filming the season. They had to do reshoots because of it.
Indeed, and actually Prodigy hasn't quite been cancelled yet. Season 2 is coming out (and continued production while it was "cancelled"), while a season 3 is still possible if the show does OK on Netflix.

In a recent Collider interview ( https://collider.com/star-trek-prodigy-dan-kevin-hageman/ ), the Hagemans talk about the fan reaction (mentioning specifically the selling out of toys, books and the famous banner). They felt devastated after getting the bad news.

Regarding the season 2 finale, they say: "Season 1 kept getting bigger and the finale of Season 1 was huge, and then now we gotta go bigger. So now we're at the end of Season 2 and you’re on a little TV show budget, and we're just trying to make it as big and as amazing as possible."
Not sure how I feel about this, the ambition is nice but for me you don't have to "top" the ending with each new season. Lower stakes can be nice.

There was internal discussion about Drednok having a crazy voice/attitude, but the Hagemans decided that a soft and silent villain would actually be more scary. I applaud this choice.

They would love to see the Prodigy characters being used in other Star Trek material, including live action series, "Those Old Scientists" style.

One of the themes of season 2: "There's so much that these kids can learn from their elders at Star Trek, but there's also an equal amount of stuff their elders can learn from the kids – the joy they have, the sense of adventures they have. Sometimes some of that is missed by Admiral Janeway."
Apparently, VA Janeway also learns from the Prodigies as well as the other way round.

From 3u45 on, a panel hosted by Anthony Pascal from Trekmovie, with Brannon Braga, the Hagemans and Aaron Waltke. They talk about Voyager, Prodigy, mostly production aspects of those shows and the links between them. They're very kind to one another ;)

Nothing really new, allthough it was interesting to hear Aaron say that they have no idea when Netflix will drop season 2 and Netflix may not appreciate them guessing in public.

From what Braga said, they had very little time to develop scripts for Voyager (the production tempo was very high). I'm glad we're past the 26-episode seasons now, in the streaming age.

Braga also said that at the time (starting with TNG), the studio would come down hard on the producers if they dared to propose serial elements or an episode that changed the status quo. He mentions they absolutely had to add "To be continued" to such episodes as "Best of both worlds (I)". Otherwise they feared much of the audience would be confused "what kind of ending is that?". Happy we're past that, too.

I wish CTV would provide a little more clarity around their plans for airing season 2. My ISP is currently running a sale on their IPTV service, so if I had a better idea what was going on, it might make financial sense to sign up while the sale is on.

Aaron Waltke indirectly promises some spectacular alien cityscapes (I'm guessing likely on Solum, though the Voyager may also visits some spectacular places, I suppose): https://twitter.com/GoodAaron/status/1757514752719528397

The artwork from Solum (like here: https://www.conceptartassociation.com/2022-caa-finalists/solum-city-star-trek-prodigy ) has always been intriguing: the big chasm in the middle, a bit Trantor/Coruscant like. No idea how this is going to be portrayed in season 2, when we almost certainly must enter this city or another much like it.

Hopefully it ain't too long till season 2 airs. I thought it would be out last December. By the time it comes round, I can probably stop greeting people with "Happy New Year!"

I do not see this as being promising news, Netflix would not want to wait 3 years for new episodes.

Based on what?

Squid Game Season 1 started streaming in 2021. Season 2 is still in production as of 2024.

Stranger Things Season 4 was released in 2022. Season 5 is expected to drop in 2025.

The Sandman Season 1 was released in 2023 and it looks likely that we won’t see Season 2 until 2025/26.

Netflix will (and do) wait if they think the wait is worth it.
