News Star Trek Prodigy Cancelled, Season 2 to be shopped around

Has any one person ever caused as much damage to the entertainment industry as Zaslav?

The entertainment industry has so many evil power brokers, really hard to crown just one, though Zaslav would definitely be a contender. Harvey also springs to mind. He's top of mind due to the serial rapes, but he also innovated a number of horrible business practices that were extremely toxic to the industry at large.

You could blame Ted Serandos for creating the streaming model that destroyed the economic engine of Hollywood. Or you could blame all the other execs who raced him down that same rabbit hole, with no plan as to how this model could ever become a sustainable business.

Or whoever at Apple decided to pay massively more than anyone else had ever paid, further deforming the existing economics of the industry.

Here's the thing, I think Prodigy should be sold to Netflix. Why? it has more potential kids to watch it. which is its intended audience. right now its probably older people ( like me) and trekkie's children that watch it. There hasn't been much promoting in getting it out there, so alot of kids don't know it even exists. if it is on netflix, then it can be put in its children catagory and get some of the intended viewers.

Same with the potential Starfleet Academy series, should be on Netflix with the other teeny bopper stuff, sorry but paramount's viewer base skews older, your not going to get the intended teenager audience.

honestly, thats why Star Trek was "saved" by the 2009 movie, because it had more mass appeal, and brought new people in.

Isn't Netflix half dead? It was run into the ground and Stranger Things is its only lifesupport left.

Subscriber base wide - Netflix is doing better than ever as the #1 streamer in the world with over 230 million subscribers - it has increased subscribers over last quarter and last year. It had $4.4 BILLION net profit in 2022. It is far from half dead.

OK, but that's not solely the idea of one person. What I meant was, has anyone done more harm by themselves. As far as I can tell, this whole tax write-off thing was invented by Zaslav, or at the very least heavily popularised by him.

"It seems as though a week cannot pass without Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav committing another act of entertainment jackassery. Not content with merely strip-mining one of the film world’s most important studios for parts and tax write-offs, he has now set his sights on ripping TCM to shreds. Film Twitter pushed back, and even directors like Martin Scorsese protested the move, which included major layoffs at the channel and the decision to close down the UK version next month. For many film lovers, Turner Classic Movies is a lighthouse in an increasingly dark cultural landscape, a gateway to old cinema that the industry has never seemed interested in developing. Zaslav tried to placate his doubters, but there’s a reason nobody believes him, not when entire films and TV series are being pulled from streaming services for the purposes of profit in the midst of a writers’ strike.

David Zaslav is a cultural vandal, a figure of astonishing impunity who views one of our most important artforms as little more than a series of knickknacks in a vault he can pick apart for pennies. What he has done to Warner Bros. is nothing short of embarrassing and the doors it has opened for his fellow executives to follow suit will have shocking long-term consequences. But he’s not the only player in town engaging in this twisted game. He’s simply the latest - and loudest - example of one of the industry’s proudest traditions: self-hatred and mindless greed."

I agree with that. Prodigy stands naturally next to Netlfix library shows like Trollhunters and Arcanum, and even to such shows as Stranger Things. The audience of those shows may be more open to Prodigy than a purely Trek public.

Internationally, Netflix also still has rights to older Star Trek series. Especially for those who watch Voyager (and TOS), Prodigy is also a natural match.

Yes, but we should hate him the most, yes?

Why shouldn't we? He's at the forefront of everyone's minds because he started this current trend. I mean, I don't understand why you're trying to defend him.

According to investors, financial and media analysts, the opposite is true:

https://www.cnbc.com/2023/06/25/netflix-rises-again-as-legacy-media-failures-mount.html

Legacy media companies enter dark times as failures mount and Netflix rises again

Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery, Paramount Global and Fox have all had major setbacks in 2023.

The legacy media industry is in retrenchment mode as Hollywood writers strike and Netflix bounces back.

Without a clear growth narrative, it’s hard to see how legacy media companies bounce back soon.

Investors have once again become excited by Netflix’s future prospects as it’s cracked down on password sharing, potentially leading to tens of millions of new signups. Netflix shares have surged the past five months, outpacing the S&P 500.

Meanwhile, the legacy players can’t get out of their own way

I mean, you could apply that to any other greedy businessperson. "I don't hate Jeff Bezos, I hate his choices."
"I don't hate Elon Musk, I hate his choices."
Choices aren't made in a vacuum. Someone's actions are usually remarkably good indicators of their personality and character.

You do you. I don't know the man so I choose ti hate actions not a person I don't know personally.

Especially since this person was hired to do a job..I'm more angry at the board of directors and their choices.

So you don't hate the man who is helping destroy the entertainment industry by making it a trend to make it impossible to watch series that are unsuccessful? Alright, then. Personally, I can't imagine someone that greedy is a good person.

Indeed. Seeing Janeway return in PRO was quite the treat.

We've had greedy businessmen since time immemorial. Look at Carnegie, Morgan, and Rockefeller, while they were building their empires.

Yes, and I hate them too? Greed is one of the worst possible personality traits to have because it demonstrates excessive selfishness.
More directly related to the thread, according to Amazon Prime, Prodigy was supposed to have left Paramount+ in the UK seven minutes ago, yet it's still there for me. I'll check again in the morning.
