Where are you getting that they “left him to die”? The episode literally ends with the Prodigy crew in a tractor beam in space outside the ship having just barely escaped.

Someone else said it at the top of the thread. I'm not ready to make that judgement yet.

The Chakotay scene made it sound like it was shortly after Voyager came home. So 2377/2378.

I believe the producers said The USS Protostar was built using FTL technology Voyager brought back from the Delta Quadrant, so it’s launch would probably be closer to late 2381 or 2382. That would still give plenty of time for the ship to stop responding and for Janeway to mount a rescue mission.

Feels good to be back after 8 months, and the season starts off with a bang - literally.

I love the decision to have the kids roll right on up to a Federation relay station. Given the ominous portents we had at the end of the first 10-episode arc, it's clear that the kids can't ever really "go home" so to speak (at least not without abandoning the ship). I thought they'd just go right into the kids discovering it and then playing cat and mouse with the real Janeway all season as she serves as the antagonist. But having them see the practical effects of attempting to make contact adds real-world consequences to their actions, which will make the remainder of the season so much better. It also snatches away a false "happy ending" from the protagonists - which once again is great, as the story has moved forward, but now they have a new crisis to resolve.

While this is pretty clearly a plot-focused serialized show, the character writing remains excellent (especially considering it's nominally a children's show). The ability of the writers to have each of the five main characters distinct personalities (including their flaws and insecurities) come through in the course of a half-hour runtime is impressive. No one here gets a character arc so to speak, but all of the interactions are enjoyable.

The Diviner being rescued by real Janeway is interesting, but IIRC he was essentially mind-wiped because of seeing Zero, so I'm not sure what role he will really play in the story from here on out.

This episode does absolutely nothing wrong, but IMHO it would have been better served if it focused on a single POV and integrated a character arc into the plot this week. While there was certainly a crisis of the week, I do wonder if in retrospect after reaching the end of the season if this will stand out as memorably distinctive.

Based on the little we’ve seen of Medusan effects on humanoids, it seems to affect each species a little differently. For instance, humans can die from organ failure but Spock was locked in a strange mind meld with Kollos.

Gwyn recovered her memories after some rehabilitation, so perhaps Vau N’akat (who already have shown some telekinetic abilities) have some resistance and can recover. Will be interesting to see what the Diviner does or does not remember in Starfleet’s care.

Based on his appearance, he's gone a bit loony from isolation. Perhaps he proclaimed himself, <fan fare plays> a Super-Admiral!

“What I'm saying is that we're a sociable people. Being alone on Enterprise, just the two of us, has proven more stressful than I imagined.” - Dr. Phlox

Denobulans typicallly hang out naked when alone, and Frex wasn’t expecting company… so that may be why he looks so disheveled. He dressed in a hurry And grabbed whatever clothes were around.

He's supposed to be a Lt. JG in the science division who doubles as provisional Chief of Operations. Of course, the hollow insignia is generally accepted to be for Chief Petty Officer, but TPTB chose to ignore/retcon that.

also TNG to DS9 pretty much changed how to signify those titles on O’Brien every other season, so if anything it’s in keeping with tradition

It's good to have the best modern Trek series back.

I'm kind of surprised that the Diviner was left behind on Tars Lamora. I was expecting him to be locked up in the holodeck.

The whale rescue scene was great and I loved the shot looking up at the Protostar from underwater. I'm guessing we'll see the Dauntless visit this planet at some point since there's no way they modeled all of that just for one scene.

Looking forward to the rest of this season.

The Chakotay scene made it sound like it was shortly after Voyager came home. So 2377/2378.

She was probably an Admiral for a while by that point already.... its just that Chakotay mostly got used to Kathryn as a Captain.
Who knows how often they saw each other after VOY got home and before he got the Protostar.

However, Janeway was promoted to Vice-Admiral a year after VOY got home.
Since Endgame took place in 2378, she would have been promoted sometime in 2379.
I suspect that the Protostar was comissioned shortly after that (aka early 2380).

SF could have been developing these technologies ever since VOY transmitted its files via Pathfinder when Barclay first made contact in uisng the micro wormhole - subsequently, SF was able to send messages on a monthly basis, and VOY DID receive tactical updates for its systems in those monthly data streams after all. But Janeway transmitted ship's logs, crew reports and navigational records to SF when Barclay opened a brief real time link via the micro wormhole.

I'm sure the pod is due to be picked up by the Dauntless, because plot.

Plus the eyewitnessing Denobulan will likely tell a 'horrifying tale' about the Protostar and the kids and the comm station blowing up shortly after that.
Now we know why would real Janeway hunt them without questioning things much.
On one hand she found a broken commbadge from the Protostar on Tars Lamora, she will likely find the exploded remains of a comm relay station and the Denobulan about a tale of how kids who claimed to have STOLEN the Protostar (I'm sure he will conveniently omit the fact they found it - but that is more or less to be expected given how he blamed the kids for what happened to the comm station).
