"Star Trek: Picard" Scores at Saturn Awards!

That was MONTHS ago. Why are you still holding a grudge about that?

There's only one poster on the entire board I have a problem with, and it took YEARS to get up to that point. Not one stupid locked thread.
Hey, you wanted examples. That thread's full of em. Plenty more out there to find. Knock yourself out.

Look, the positive or negative merits of Rick Berman, Brannon Braga, Ira Steven Behr, Ronald D Moore, Manny Coto etc were all debated back in the day. Many Star Trek fans pay attention to the credits just as much as in-universe world building.

Live action NuTrek has suffered from far greater writing staff and show runner instability than the Berman era did. Even the most stable, SNW, saw half its writing staff change over between its two already produced seasons. So there's bound to be a reaction to the differences between seasons.

DS9 vs VGR was definitely a thing. I'm sure many people thought Ronald D Moore should have been the one to co-create ENT, not the on the record TOS sceptic Brannon Braga.

You want Trekbbs examples? Try checking out that old locked thread: Did Picard finally "right the ship" with Picard season 3? It's swimming with examples from the likes of Citiprime, cal888, TerryTrek, etc. Beyond that, you can do your own homework.
Since I was called out by name, for anyone interested please do check out that thread.

Here's what you'll find:
  • Any excitement about a possible follow-up with Legacy is I guess likened to cult-like behavior, because I don't see anyone claiming Matalas can do no wrong. Just people who liked what Matalas did with season 3 or thought it was better than the first 2 seasons of Picard or may have liked it better than DSC and SNW. That's something the usual suspects in this thread needed to explicitly tell people was a wrong opinion for people to have.
  • Some of the same people shitting on the Picard season 3 team winning these awards in this thread outright tell the fans who liked season 3 that even if it was popular they're wrong to like it so much, and write off any positives with the same buzzwords like "nostalgia," dismissing the opinions of entire swaths of the Star Trek community (and the public at large) as irrelevant and wrong.
  • Since the same crew love to throw around the word "cult," those same people are defensive and won't allow any criticism of Discovery or Strange New Worlds. Also, when you point out some of the same flaws in their favorite Nu-Trek shows or that those shows use "nostalgia" too, how dare us speak ill of them, because that's different and the right version of nostalgia.

Guilty as charged. I was one of those people.

That's what I thought. I stopped posting in that thread after a certain point because it felt too painful to be torn between two sides. But what you described was the overall sense I came away with at the time.

won't allow any criticism of Discovery or Strange New Worlds.
I've been like that with Discovery, so I can say this is true. I've tried to stick strictly to using examples from the show to address those critiques, like I do here, but there have been slips in the past during the heat of a thread/debate/argument. It's happened.

Good thing (or bad thing?) I'm an insomniac. I'll need the strongest pot of black coffee "tomorrow".

I've been drinking it straight black since I was 12. But I feel like that's not going to be enough. Night!

LOL same here, but I've recently been introduced to the energy drink Celsius, which has the caffeine equivalent of like 3-4 cups of coffee. That's become my usual "breakfast."

I don't like Energy drinks or large amounts of Caffeine. I don't even drink Coffee.

Anyways, the only person I see defending SNW as described in this thread is Serveaux.

I'm in the SNW subforum daily, really nothing culty going on there.

Same with Discovery.

"Do your own research" is the last refuge of a scoundrel. If you're making the argument it's your job to substantiate it, not tell other people to do it for you. That which can be asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence.
Or... bear with me here, I don't have the time, energy, or desire to go through almost a years worth of post to prove something that's been prevalent enough on this board to become a running joke. Nevermind what's out there on social media. Not at 2am. Not at 10am.

Raining on a parade is NOT cool. Which is what happened. How would you like it the situation were reversed, SNW swept the Saturns, then I came in and rained on that Parade? That
I'd love it. It would be a blast.

And, for therecord, i did congratulate the castand crew. My only push back was beung told that Season 3 was all nines. I don't agree.
But I'm not in the SNW forum line iteming each episode's "canon violations'', tonal inconsistences, and why they violate the TOS and TNG show bible guidelines of Roddenberry himself for what a Star Trek episode should and shouldn't be.
I'd love that. Please do it.

Agreed.

The Terry Trek hats and such were a line too for me. I've not seen that ever before in Trek.

Was it cult like behavior for Pike / Discoprise fans to have a petition for what became SNW? If anything, there likely was a much stronger argument to be made for Legacy in 2023 than for SNW in 2019 (and Legacy did garner +/- twice the petition signatures as SNW did. But SNW got there first, and the streaming boom burst in the meantime, so here we are. And, it's not like there are people here arguing SNW should be shut down mid production and pulped like Batgirl just to get Legacy going...

Guilty as charged. I was one of those people.
By and large, I was a VGR fan. I appreciated the fresh blood Seven of Nine brought to the series in season 4, and the contributions of people like Michael Taylor and Nick Sagan in season 5. But when Ron Moore came and went so suddenly at the beginning of season 6, I just knew it was only downhill from there into increasing mediocrity.

Just a tip, if you visit a country where they serve coffee in shot glass sized plastic cups, assume it's much stronger than normal and don't fill a much larger water cup with it assuming it's just normal black coffee.
I'd love that. Please do it.
I'll pass. There's just too many new series and films I want to watch backlogged on my to see list. If I want to revisit anything from NuTrek and go into it in depth, it's likely to be PS1 knowing where everything ended up in PS3.

It's not like a BBS member created those. It was a YouTube channel (that also did the Legacy petition) trying to get people that burned out on NuTrek to give PS3 a chance. And part of promoting it was talking about how Matalas worked on Berman era Trek. Not all marketing will appeal to all people. Some marketing may very well turn off some while attracting others.

I mean, I'm not Steve Shives intended audience. So I'm not going to bring up elsewhere his stance on Star Trek.

Disappointing but I understand. I welcome your opinions regardless.

Yes.

And repeated strongly here. It was off-putting and frustrating because Season 3 was called "true Trek, " and felt very insulting, for want of a better term. Never mind the praise heaped for appealing to the YT Trek crowd.

Nowhere would I want person in charge of Trek.

I could just as easily say I don't want to give the final season of DISCOVERY a chance because of how some of its fans behave on Twitter and how it seemed to embrace the Tumblr crowd.

And you could be right.

Discovery fans are insufferable.

Look, a certain percentage of fans of anything are bound to be insufferable. But I wouldn't say that all fans of a particular cultural product are insufferable. Different tastes for different people...
I'm a fan of Discovery and I'm insufferable.

I cannot speak for the Twitter or Tumblr crowds since I do not go there.
