Spoilers Star Trek: Picard General Discussion Thread

I'm not sure where to write this or if this was ever touched upon before, but I've just begun pondering the human characters in this series after seeing Gabriel Hwang, and I just realized how much more diverse humanity is in PIC than in previous series. Rios is Brazilian/Portuguese, Raffi Musiker has a German name, and has had a son with an apparently Korean or Chinese man; Picard's doctor Moritz Benayoun from the Stargazer has a Moroccan Jewish name, and Rizzo's cover identity is presumably Italian or at least Italian American. I find this quite a refreshing variety after the practically all-American Berman era.

And they let Evan Evagora keep his Australian accent.

Funny how some folks just seem to be begging for this to be fired in their direction ...

I'll give him points for saving me a bit of trouble by just putting the post here in the first place.

There is not one negative thread or comment here on this series nor any (justified) criticism of this (awfully bad) "Star Trek" series.

Or is this some happy-clappy let's-love-every-crap-we're-fed" weird place out of a Twilight Zone? Honestly, this forum/thread is worse than North Korea, having the hack writer slash producer and plagiarist Alex Kurtzman as its Great Leader in a "wonderful, perfect world of Fake Trek", where everyone is blindly praising and worshiping his each new creation (or rather abomination), and where every honest, and above all justified, criticism considering the absolute trampling of Star Trek spirit/canon and the virtual non-existence of any creativity, is practically non-existent (and treated with disdain?). One just needs to look at those numerous forum members sporting avatars of characters from this new series "Star Trek" Picard - which, by the way, is neither (I for one am not fooled by the title) -, and that only after a handful of episodes. It's like putting photos on your desk of someone after only meeting them for the first time. That's either a true fan(aticism) or a paid professional! Tertium non datur.

God, I'm glad there are such sites as IMDb which have a reasonable amount of, again, justified and understandable negative reviews/comments of this horribly bad piece of television, which only symbolically carries the name Star Trek and features past Trek series characters.

Has nobody wondered about and been surprised by the profanities and the F bombs in this series (having the name Star Trek), which is so uncharacteristic of and misplaced in Star Trek? Is nobody here bothered by that? Everyone would be bothered by it if it were used here, in the threads of this forum, where its rules prohibit its use, but I guess none of the 'blindly devoted' to this Kurtzman-instalment are or would ever be bothered by it, even if it were used more excessively. Talk about double standards.

What a shame. What a bad piece of science-fiction this is. What a terrible representation ("vision") of Star Trek. Now some may say, "it's not the 90's anymore" or "it's, like, your opinion". Well, it's not about present vs past, it's about respect vs disrespect (of the source material), and, besides, thinking this crap is good is also just an opinion. While I may respect such an opinion, I have no respect for that towards which such favorable opinion is held, in this case the fake trek series having the name Picard. The series Picard is made by the same hack writers and producers of the Kurtzman team as the abomination STD. It's another drivel masquerading as Star Trek. Unfortunately. As much as I love Star Trek (1966-2005) and wishing it success, I can't even like this garbage. It's all Star Trek isn't. It's anti-Trek. Like everything produced by Bad Robot (or rather Bad Reboot), Secret Hideout et al. We usually say "live long and prosper", and while I wish that upon the Official Works of Trek 1966-02 as well as the Trek-like series The Orville, to STP (as well as STD) I wish - Live short and fail.

The gig is up. It's true. Not only is this site sponsored by CBS All Acces, I'm on its payroll. Making some pretty good money.

We salute your bravery. Now, go enjoy the latest episode of The Orville.

I'd hate to break this beautiful chain of posts above, but...

We've got Australian Romulans, Irish Romulans and English Romulans. As much as some people like complaining about aliens having "out-of-place" Earth accents, this is just something that meshes so well with what I've said about the all-American Berman era. I mean, does the characterization of these accents as "out-of-place" stem from the thought that Standard American is the "generic", "unaccented" form of English? OK, it's American TV, I understand.

But really, letting the actors keep their native accents while playing alien characters helps to make them a little bit more diverse as well. There's no reason why a Romulan's native accent shouldn't remind us of an Irish or an Australian accent. I also like the implication that the Universal Translator is sophisticated enough to pick up on regional varieties of an alien languages and render them as distinct English dialects. I like when the Federation is portrayed as preserving diversity instead of merging everything into a late-20th-century American amalgamation.

Different? You mean something entirely different, as not being Star Trek or having its character(istics) at all (?). Well, yeah, I agree, it's that different.
The way I see it, Picard spent the majority of his life in space, espousing the virtues of Starfleet and the Federation. But now he's home and retired, he's seeing through the cracks in the facade. Think of all the evil and corrupt captains, admirals and whatnot we've seen for 50 years. Think of those complicit in Section 31's DS9 scheme to eradicate the Changelings. This is the world they're symptomatic of. And hopefully by the end, Starfleet will be living their supposed values again.

Kinda curious how you feel regarding The Orville's casual treatment of rape, since that's caused me a lot more bother than anything we've seen in Picard.
I think @King Daniel Beyond needs to be in on this discussion.
Sorry, been busy logging in as all these other people to post positive comments:D
