Spoilers Star Trek: Picard General Discussion Thread

"I don't want to spend $5.99 per month just to watch Discovery or Picard! Now excuse me while I order a new-and-improved accurate-to-scale Enterprise-D from Ebay! Only $219.99!!! That's a real deal!!!"

I'm someone who's like this. I'll buy a nice-looking piece of Star Trek ornamentation or something like that, because it's cool and something neat to look at it!

But when it comes to Picard, Discovery, Stranger Things, the Mandalorian or, hell, even now The Orville it's being more against subscription services. How many of these damn things are we going to have to subscribe to to keep "in the loop" with the latest television series of our favorite franchises and each one costing $10 a month. Oh, sure, you get that first month free a lot of the time but you still need to input credit card information and then remember to unsubscribe before that first month gets charged to you.

I'm already paying $100+ a month for cable, I've got Netflix, YouTube Premium and Amazon Prime. I'm also not doing CBS:AA and Disney+. I'm interested in seeing the Mandalorian but I'm not doing another subscription service.

Further, Disney+ isn't supported by by PS3 which serves as my Blu Ray player and streaming device and I do not have a "smart" TV. I could still do it with a dongle, HDMI connection, or something but I'm not doing all of that for one TV series on one service that'll I'll cancel soon after. Same with CBS:AA. Not doing it.

It's all too much of a pain in the ass, complicated and there's way too many streaming services out there. I've drawn a line in the sand when it comes to them.

So would I buy that model of the Ent-D for $250? Probably. (Depends on how it looks, the scale, etc.) It's something nice I can look at and enjoy. Picard? It's a lot of hassle, though likely less money, I have to go through to watch a series all indications tell me that I'm really not going to like.

I meant this in jest. But, in all seriousness, I agree that you shouldn't pay for and watch something you probably won't like. I think the first month of CBSAA is free, so you don't have to put down any credit card information. You probably already know this but I figured I'd type it anyway. I figure you must be at least somewhat curious or you wouldn't be in here.

The one thing about the subscription service thing I say, is that it honestly sucks that here in Europe Star Trek will be spread between Netflix and Amazon.

Not really. I imagine the majority have both, and Picard is the only one on Prime.

I'm pretty sure that's not how it goes. Discovery is on Netflix only and Picard on Amazon only. I think all the old Trek is only on Netflix too, but I'm less sure about that. Ultimately point is that if you want to watch both current Trek shows, which are produced by one company, you need to buy two subscription services.

In my experience any time you sign up for a subscription service, even with the first month being free, you have to lay down CC information. Maybe CBS-AA is different, but it seems that's always been the case just so they can "get you" on that first month of forgetting to cancel the service or to, at least, have some level of accountability of tieing you to the service.

Classic Trek and Discovery is on Netflix and Picard is on Prime. Sure that’s two services but it’s not a big deal. People will
Have Prime for the Grand Tour anyway. :)

There’s your problem

Doesn’t cable tv come with 20 minutes of adverts too to cost you even more?

Well, those advertisements don't cost me anything and can be skipped with the DVR features. FWIW, that $100 cable bill (I think it's closer to $140 or something, I really don't remember) includes my internet connection.

But, again, I have cable, I have Netflix, I have Amazon Prime and I hace YouTube Premium. Netflix I don't really watch too often anymore but I share it with my parents and they get a lot out of it and it's a nice thing to go to occasionally when I really need something to watch. Amazon Prime I use on occasion but the most I get from that are the shipping benefit, YouTube Premium mostly to no longer have adverts in the videos.

I don't need, or want, Disney+ and CBS:AA just for one TV series on each.

Fuck no. If I never see Clarkson's ignorant bigot face again that will be too soon. But I'm sure there is something nice on Amazon. They have American Gods, I think? I haven't seen the second season.
