That's always been my issue with that episode. Scotty is out of character until the point where they work together to find/save the1701-D.

One or two elements might have passed as organic; it's the sheer volume of it in this episode which becomes jarring.
From the music cues, to the ships and accompanying dialogue, to the displays, to Encounter at Farpoint clips, to Moriarty, to Data/B4/Lore...it was too much for me as a long-time fan, let alone those less keen on the franchise (my partner, who has enjoyed the series so far, hated this episode.)
Too much Star Trek in your Star Trek
Star Trek isn't based on callbacks.
There is no past. Nothing remains. All is fleeting and ephemeral. Who knew the Trek fanbase had a nihilistic wing?
It clearly is now, given the fawning.
Wanting something new is not nihilistic. Looking to the future instead of thr past always struck me as optimistic.
My friend I have seen you post on here that Pike is your favorite captain. PIKE. The dude from the very first Trek ever made.
Not what I meant, but you know that. The franchise shouldn't rely on bringing in the past so much, TNG was right to keep that to a minimum.
Pike is not the only draw to SNW. The new characters, Ortegas, La'an and Hemmer are the bigger draw now.
Damn it! Better not happen again! The fun distracts me from the seriousness!
If you want something new, then a show designed to revisit one of the most popular legacy characters is a weird place to look.
You can do both.
