I find myself thinking of an old Starlog article (yes, I know, "old Starlog article" is a tautology) titled "The Other Marty McFly." It traced two timelines through the events of Back to the Future, and how each timeline's Marty ended up crossing over to the other Marty's timeline.

I must admit that I was very much less than happy that we never really saw any real Borg in this series outside of the Queen! The few guys we were told had Borg implants could have been shown to be metamorphing into the cybernetic monsters/zombies that we are used to in the franchise! :borg:

The issue I had is that they went to a point before the change and so the original timeline should still be intact and Guinan should know.
Like most things in the first two seasons, it just wasn't very well thought out.

But the confederation and federation past's are the same until a certain point. I would assume that until that point, the main unaltered time would still be intact meaning Guinan would know.
Its all very confusing and I wish they addressed it in the actual show. That and why Q was dying.

It would have been too late, the changes to the timeline already happened. There was no future for picard to go back to the early 1900s.

The Confederation and the Federation's pasts are the same until a certain point, but the point they diverge isn't the point where the change happened (2024), it's the earliest time to be influenced by time travellers.

It is a bit of a chicken or the egg scenario, and you have to question also whether the timeline isn't already changed by Guinan not having met Picard in Time's Arrow.

You could go round in circles over what happened "first" but the implication is that without the correction to the timeline then Time's Arrow doesn't happen hence why she doesn't know them - it is convoluted to an extent but show me a time travel/loop story that doesn't require at least some leeway to make work and I'll be amazed

Rather funny that "timey-wimey" stuff should come up. Because last night, I saw a production of what is probably Sondheim's least-performed musical, Merrily We Roll Along, and those of you who've seen it (or seen the Kaufman & Hart play on which it was based) already know that it's whole structure is based on reverse chronology, one temporal focal point at a time. "Timey-wimey" indeed. And if you haven't already seen it, you should: it's a beautiful and moving show that's been one of my favorites for decades.

But how the young Confederation-timeline Guinan would be unaware of "Time's Arrow," but the old Federation-timeline Guinan would be aware of the events of the entire second season of Picard is a bit of a puzzle (even especially given that El-Aurians have unusual temporal awareness). And never finding out just exactly why Q is dying is definitely a disappointment.

Q dying has to be related to Quinn’s death and the Q civil war.

This is my train of thought.

So much changed within the Continuum when the Q waged their civil war and then Q and the female Q conceived and had a child that Q himself may have sacrificed his immortal future in exchange for a new order within his realm.
