Wow, what a way to open a season. The pace was great and I thoroughly enjoyed the episode with all of it's drama, jokes, characters and ship porn. This was just as good, if not better than season 1 opener, Remembrance, which I also loved. Really enjoyed the cast who were seemingly thrilled about returning, altough only Picard had real scenes (though that is understandable, since it's his own series).

It was great to see Quinan and Q again after all these years, they even have in-universe explanation on why they look older than before. And at least Q returns in next episode as well. Well done producers, you have created a wonderful entry into this series.

10/10. Still in awe.

I'm inclined to disregard that line. It doesn't even make sense. Why would Vulcans be significantly less likely to serve in the military force of the interstellar union they co-founded? That would be like Massachusetts not sending anyone to join the U.S. Navy after ratifying the Constitution.

Starfleet is still a very Earth dominated organization in the 2250s. Most of the Vulcans in Starfleet were transferred from previous Vulcan Military Service, or the Science Academy, (like Michael Burnham), I see no conflicts with only a few Vulcans actually learning alongside humans at Starfleet Academy by the time Spock joined.

Basically many Vulcans probably found living among emotional species unpleasant, but would later transfer to Starfleet if it was the logical course of action for what they wanted to study.

"GUINAN: Q set a series of events into motion, bringing contact with the Borg much sooner than it should have come. Now, perhaps when you're ready, it might be possible to establish a relationship with them. But for now, for right now, you're just raw material to them."

These Borg might have been the ones, Guinan talked about in this scene from "Q, Who?" and that's what Q may have meant with "the road not taken"...

The idea that an organization formed from combining four worlds' space forces would ever be dominated by only one of those worlds in the first place doesn't make sense.

The Intrepid had a crew of over 400 Vulcans and that was a Constitution-class starship. Vulcan members of Starfleet were important enough by 2268 that one of the twelve most advanced and powerful ships in the fleet was crewed entirely by them.

This is how I see it, when the Federation was founded all 4 space forces were relaunched. So the new Vulcan High Command and the Andorian (Federal?) Guard also have 2161 founding dates now. They are all out there doing Federation business. It took over a century for Starfleet to become the primary arm of these 4, with the other 3 slowly contracting back to primarily homeworld level business.

That would be like if the 13 original states all kept their own separate navies and then gradually the Virginia Navy started being used by the Union and the rest of the state navies stuck to their local shores.

Fans don’t want to watch a disrespected Picard with a “ragtag” crew on an empty looking ship…
Speak for yourself. This fan enjoyed that, and I also know many others who did.

I wonder if the Southerland class of ship is suppose to be the same exact ship that Data once commanded,.
It's named after it, but it isn't it. Different registry. (at least in STO's lore)

I think Spock was just speaking metaphorically.
I think so too. But I think the general idea would be adopted as meaning destiny is a force in the Star Trek universe. I'm not saying that Spock was being literal but I think the idea is being played around with in a different way.

I don't remember him not being nice with his crew.
Agreed. I thought the episode established a nice rapport between Rios and his new crew.
People keep saying this but I think it's ridiculous. Yes he was shouting but firstly it was noisy and secondly THERE WAS A BORG QUEEN RIGHT THERE, they're all terrified and the queen is taking over their ship and downing their shipmates, they are scared and in the heat of battle.
Agreed, plus most of the firing after the order was given came from the security team piling onto the bridge, seeing a Borg queen mid-takeover and firing automatically - none of them had been on the bridge to hear the cease fire called. The chaos of the moment did the rest.

Laris is such a beautiful woman. I find her especially attractive in this shot.

My mind went to Simon Tarses from "The Drumhead." I think he went to the Academy but didn't stay long enough to get a commission.

TARSES: Yes, sir. All my life I wanted to be in Starfleet. I went to the Academy's training programme for enlisted personnel. I took training as a medical technician and I served at several outposts. The day that I was posted to the Enterprise was the happiest day of my life.
PICARD: Did you ever consider applying to the Academy, going the whole route, apply to become an officer?
TARSES: My parents wanted me to. And then I thought about it. I used to sit under this big tree near the parade grounds
PICARD: An elm tree with a circular bench?
TARSES: Yes, that's the one.
PICARD: I spent many an hour there. It was my favourite spot to study.
TARSES: I used to sit under that tree and watch the drills, picture myself an officer. I know that it would have made my mother very happy, but.
PICARD: You didn't do it.
TARSES: No. I was eighteen, and eager. The last thing I wanted to do was spend four years sitting in classrooms. I wanted to be out there, travelling the stars. I didn't want to wait for anything. And now it's done, isn't it? My career in Starfleet is finished.

They really love the word synthetic. They never used that word 20 years ago and now they use it for everything when it comes to machines
