I'm curious to know what people thought of the new textures brought into the portrayal of the Romulans specifically in this episode. Things felt very North African to me, particularly with the presentation of the Qowat Milat, but the town also had a sort of desert stop-over vibe as well.

He did want Raffi to come. That was the point of going to see her. He wanted a pilot and a ship. She is a pilot with a ship. She offers him the name of Rios rather than herself and her own ship. But not because he asked for a different name and ship. Yes, he says he needed her mind, which is not the same thing as not wanting her to come. If anything, that is definitely wanting her to come. Even coming to her with this, could risk her life. He seemed ok with that. But this idea that he clearly did not want her to come is nonsense.
She wanted Raffi to find him a pilot with an unregistered ship. Before you accuse everyone else of being wrong, you really need to go back to the episode, pay a little attention, and get your facts straight.

Most folks can't get past the "ELF" Ninja.
So I'm not sure if many paid that much attention to the local.

Looked a lot like the Bajoran Camps we saw in DS-9, to me.

I liked the former Senator. Appropriately angry at Picard but also restrained and controlled enough to avoid a physical confrontation until the last minute. I could see a former high-ranking member of the Romulan Senate being so jaded after 14 years that he'd end up being a drinker hanging out in a bar on a refugee colony and speaking to a Federation legend like Picard the way he did.

Which doesn't make sense to me. Shouldn't the cousins of ST's elves look a little like elves? And like I have said elsewhere, Elrond looks every bit like Nanclus.

Nevertheless, I think that it does go a little beyond generic borrowings.

I assumed that up to now, that there is some sort of religious life among Romulans. Some might be adherents to the Stoical religion-philosophy of the Vulcans, though there must certainly be some distinct spiritual life among Romulans. It was certainly interesting to see that portrayed. Setting DS9 and making Sisko a Bajoran religious icon certainly gave an opportunity to learn alot about Bajoran life and beliefs. This is not set on a Romulan world but we are certainly getting a heavier dose than anytime before. The Zhat Vash as well may have some religio-philosophical reason to oppose AI and synths.

And mythology has been raised as an issue on the cube by Soji. Obviously, we are meant to understand the Qowat Milat as a religious institution--they are nuns--but we don't see any spiritual practices, at least not yet.

And the Zhat Vash revulsion towards AI and androids could have a lot to do with technology used by the Vulcans at the time of the war that almost destroyed their civilization or even experiments in artificial intelligence conducted well before that war happened.

I have no problem with Elf Ninja. Elfron is fine. I would have thought he could ask Klingon sources he knows for some warriors willing to join his Fellowship of the Ring. But ok, a Romulan warrior is fine I guess.

I think Romulans was an excellent choice. Because of the need to keep the Borg in reserve, the Romulans were TNG's recurring villains. Plus Nemesis left Picard as a man who was interested in pursuing piece. The Romulans make an interesting counterpoint to Kirk and the Klingons.

That shows what I get for going away for a couple of days and coming back to find a new argument that sounds a lot like the last one.

He wanted more than that. I cant believe he couldnt find a ship and a crew. Lots of ways he could have. He wanted her in particular.

Picard : That's why I need your help. I need your mind. Your ability to see things others don't see.
Raffi: No, no, no, no. I will not go down another rabbit hole with you, JL.
Picard: Raffi,
Raffi: No, never again - Go. Get out of here, please.

Then she offers the pilot name. But decides after he leaves, to start nosing around. She brings up the Freecloud stuff, somehow figures out that Maddox is there. I will rewatch it, but I think that's where it was clear that he wanted her, not just a ship recommendation.

He may have been surprised that she finally decided to join, but it seemed clear to me that he wanted her to go, said he needed her, but she refused. Though she would recommend a pilot.

And it's preferable. TNG, DS9, VOY and DSC all explored Klingon culture. This is the first time the time we have really dug deep into Romulan culture. I'd rather see new than more of the same.
