No it wasn't. DS9 also did not take place in the Federation. DS9 also made it very clear that Earth was a utopia even if DS9, Bajor etc wasn't. Also if you think DS9 was anti-Roddenberry you don't actually get DS9.

The Federation we are seeing in Picard is literally Trump/Brexit era UK/US with teleporters and shuttlecraft. No way in a million years would the Federation have such a massive cultural shift in the span of a few years dropping all it's ideals for petty xenophobia and racism. Especially when Earth itself has suffered far worse attacks from the Breen, Borg and Xindi which did not result in widespread xenophobia and racism.

This show is just the lame "Failed Federation" plot that gets pitched, without actually having the guts to actually destroy the Federation.

"It's been 18 years since we've seen Picard and some bad shit has happened to him. "

And that doesn't stop the fact it's just not the same character, the mannerisms are different, the thought processes are entirely different, the way he's speaking and acting is entirely different.
People can change, but not that much and this just isn't the same character. This IS Professor Xavier from Xmen though. If you go watch Logan you will see he is playing Professor X here.

"Patrick Stewart only came back because of the promise he wouldn't be playing the same character he did in TNG."

Then don't have the show called Picard, based on Picard, if you're not going to play Picard.

"So maybe you should tweet him and tell him how angry you are that he isn't doing things the way you want him to. I'd love to see how he responds. Chances are he'd ignore you."

Oh wow I would be so hurt and this means literally anything to the fact it's still not the same character we saw in TNG on any level.

I feel like you’ve watched a completely different Star Trek than everybody else since 1994

Absolutely. I think this is their attempt to make Trek more "grounded" in today's world, with sex, swearing and political intrigue. But I always wanted Trek to be more about tomorrow than today. Regardless, I liked this better than the second episode.
Trek has always been about today and is no stranger to sex, political intrigue and even swearing (As much as was allowed or they could get away with).

So a little more about Raffi... Just watched the Wheaton after-show where he interviewed Michelle Hurd and asked about Raffi’s background which she fleshed out with Stewart and the show runners. Apparently Raffi’s family were all involved with Federation activities and research and she was “raised by others”. She suffered from a kind of self-destructive guilt and was on her own for most of her life. Hurd made a big point about Raffi being an addict very early on - she drinks, she smokes, and Picard found her, bonded with her and brought her up out of her malaise, into Starfleet, much like Pike did with Kirk in NuTrek 2009. When Picard resigned, her world completely collapsed; she was extremely resentful and angry and it sent her back down deep into the hole where she started off.

I wish we got a little more of that backstory in ep 3, but it’s nice to know that it’s there, at least.

Did that commbadge light up?

If you mean that badge Soji was wearing, the answer is yes! It flashed green right when she was holding Ramda's hand and agitated her.

Just in the previous episode the Romulan with the weird hairstyle said something like "If your badge flashes green, run."

It seems to suggest that Soji inadvertently turned on some Borg tech in Ramda.

Thoughts...

First Romulans with Irish accents, now holograms. What's the fascination here with irish accents?

Holographic interfaces haven't come so far since 'Discovery' over 100 years ago...

Picard stashes a fu*k ton of guns under tables of his home. So much for Earth being a peaceful paradise.

Quantum finger printing. (time travel?)

The sister = Borg Queen is coming back?

More mysteries and questions raised, why do you want to go to cloud city or wherever? Find out 4 episodes later.

No, Picards was glowing when Rios was calling in. I thought it was a random spotlight, but the friggin combadge was GLOWING! Don't got a screenshot of it but someone else will.

I thought it was an odd coincidence when it comes to tv writers copying each other The Romulan that Picard & Narisa and Zhebrev were questioning killing himself with a acid pill and the new McGyver show I watched last night the bad guy killed himself with poison too. It seems like it's being overused in both shows .

Still facepalming in 2020....

Ah, the Trekkie paradox... give them the same, they’ll complain it’s the same and want something different.. give them something different and they’ll complain it’s different and want the same...

As I've written before, threading the needle between "This isn't like the old stuff!" and "This is just the same old stuff!" is tricky . . . and you're never going to satisfy everyone.

I don't think the green stuff is supposed to be acid. I think it's nanotech of some sort. Acid doesn't dissolve a body like that. It reacts with what it can until its spent and becomes water and gas. But it can't break down a mass larger than it is.
