Here's the thing: in the real world, a commander in the military would direct someone to another officer or leader lower in the chain of command for help, someone closer to that person who still has more experience, someone that s/he wants to develop. It helps to develop the skills of that leader and strengthen the cohesion of the organization. S/he would only deal with such matters directly if there were no other choice.
It shows that he respects Boimler as an officer. Plus it gives him a needed boost in his confidence and help him grow into a leader by giving him someone to mentor.

A middle of the road Lower Decks for me.

I enjoyed all the stuff on the 'Ritos. And I appreciate them breaking format and showing the Lower Decks of other ships. But the Vulcans were too much ENT-era ones, uptight and unimaginative. The rebel Vulcan was the most Vulcan of them all.

And I never cared for the Space Viking Klingons. The Targ was cute tho'.

I did LOL with both the Paklad Lower Decks and the Borg one. Also, "Red Alarm!"

Since every drone is equal, how could the Borg actually have a 'lower decks'?' On a cube, there's no such thing.

I mean, technically, it could refer to the actual decks on the lowest part of the ship, where those four happened to have their alcoves. Alternatively, they might be newly assimilated, still undergoing 26-hours-a-day regeneration until they can be equivalent help as the other drones. Or maybe there is a hierarchy, of sorts, amongst the drones, but it is purely location-based, with these four (in the "Lower Decks") in charge of relatively unimportant systems, or more likely extra drones for backup, while other drones in the Upper Decks manage weaponry, transwarp, and overall security.

In ST:FC, when members of the Enterprise crew were being assimilated, it didn't take that long for them to enter service as full drones...

For example, the ones Picard gunned down on the holodeck looked as Borg as we've ever seen. You could hardly tell they were ever members of the crew.

  • Great Vulcan ship design. Very cool.
  • Shaxs' anger therapy, yo. And Rutherford calling him Papa Bear!
  • TR-116 reference! Space Clue! Good point about chefs.
  • Robin Atkin Downes–Byron from B5–was the original Klingon first officer! Also, the Dorg/M'ach fight was pretty good.
  • Callbacks to Horner's TSFS score in the final battle moments
  • Marc Evan Jackson–from Brooklyn Nine-Nine & The Good Place–as captain of the Sh'Vhal. Makes a great Vulcan voice, & would be a fantastic live-action one.
  • That end credits scene
  • Aww, poor Kayshon...
  • Memory Alpha doesn't list it, but I am 10000% certain that the voice of the Klingon saying "Captain, we are being hailed" is Michael Dorn. Maybe a new quick shot, maybe reuse from TNG or DS9, but it sure as hell sounded like Worf.

I didn’t care for the first half “bridge buddies” half, but from the (quite unexpected!) revelation that a rogue Klingon captain was responsible for the Pakled threat the episode was fantastic. A 8 for me, perhaps more.

A lot of laughs seeing the other lower deckers, also the end was great both for Boimler and for the borg. Loved the horneresque music as well.

That’s fairly typical of the Vulcans we have seen on screen. They are from a rigid and conformist and unimaginative society and it’s quite possible that they are going through another reactionary conservative phase in their history as a reaction to recent wars. Why go looking for trouble? We tend to like the rebels but they aren’t typical Vulcans.

true, but that wasn’t a typical situation: a relatively small number of borg was trying to take over the ship and needed every new drone to be operative immediately.
Perhaps on a cube no such hurry is needed, they surely took their sweet time gradually assimilating Picard after all.

Gave this one a 9.

Gotta be the first time we've seen a "Live Long & Prosper" and the Vulcan salute used as an insult. :guffaw:

Plus, the BORG Lower Decks .. don't do chit. :guffaw:

Going with a full 10 this week

notes:

ooh, no cold open, this one is going to be big

Another episode with the fan service at a minimum. More story driven.

save me a seat at lunch unless I die an honorable death, then someone else can have it.

The Klingon and Vulcan storylines were intriguing, and how they all merged up at the end. I thought the Klingon action was really well done

Vulcan Mariner and Klingon Boimler

felt bad for Boimler, kinda lonely and looking for a friend, love how he couldn't get out of the holodeck fast enough hearing Mariner and Freeman arguing over their "female issues."

Go Climb a Rock shirt!!! and El Capitan!!! nice nod to Final Frontier the one Trek film that shows that denim and flannel survive into the 23rd century

I want a RITOS shirt

the Hawaiian music on the holodeck sounded very Spongebob-ish, and the soundtrack was really epically cinematic this week

So there goes my theory that Badgey and Peanut Hamper were behind the Pakleds. Instead we get another overzealous Klingon captain.

notice that T'lyn views being transferred to a Starfleet ship as punishment. So if she's going to the Cerritos, she probably won't be pleasant to be around.

Shax has a creative side, nice. Billups has a new soup recipe, LOL

Starship Clue!

oh cool, we have cadets

this episode has a body count!

that Targ is a good boy!

Its a bomb, you can only use it once LOL

I can understand why they only use Kayson in a limited basis. The whole metaphor speak could get old if they overdid it

Everyone has mentioned the Ransom and Boimler moment in Ten forward, but i'd also like to include the Freeman and Mariner moment. "Mariner, I had a good time today." "I know, I did too."

Everyone showing up for battlestations in their off duty gear. Barnes was cute in her ski outfit.

The Borg cube Lower Decks scene is Star Trek's Schwarma scene
