Just took a look at the comments on YouTube.

In this episode we got a new alien planet and some great insight on the society of its habitants, yet a lot of people keep lamenting about the referentiality of what’s a one minute gag.

I’d bet that the same people that complain about LDS being too self-referential also complain about Picard and Discovery being too different.

And if course they all complain about the new shows being “woke” and “having an agenda”, as if Star Trek had never been a progressive show.

Oh well, some people are never happy.

Sometimes being happy is too uncomfortable.

Is there a reason why they couldn't? She's been back in The Alpha Quadrant for a while now. Plenty of time for her to run across the Pakleds. Perhaps a future novel will explore this encounter. Or maybe LDS will snag Kate for a guest shot and the show will explore it. Heh, could be Kathy and Carol were classmates at the Academy and didn't get along. Maybe Kathy was Carol's "Jennifer".

I guess they spent the 15 years after first contact with the UFP consolidating power?

I’m sure there there’s some, but from what I’ve seen most people who dislike Discovery and Picard actually like LD. And, to a lesser extent, vice versa.

IDK, every ship is "another Enterprise", so they seem to have a short attention span for names. But I'm honestly curious if Janeway met Pakleds in a novel.

McMahan WROTE that Short Trek. Rainn Wilson starred in and directed it.

I agree that McMahan would be a great writer for other shows, but IMO his talents could be applied to unify the franchise under a more common vision.

Bernd over at Ex Astris gave this episode an 8/10. Ties with Season 1's 'Cupid's Errant Arrow' as his highest rated LDS episode.

He was co-showrunner on Discovery for half of season 2 and all of 3. I assume Season 4 as well, I don't see anything online about him leaving that position.

you are probably right, more of a “you can’t please everyone”, then, maybe.

While I kinda liked Picard and didn’t dislike Discovery after season 1, I’m surely enjoying Lower Decks much more than those shows.

Another topic might be the people hating the “wokeness” of new trek, I guess, who seem to dislike all of it.

    I think I laughed.....once...?

I mean, solid idea for a show (at least the spy subplot), but, man, this was another bore. What is with this show??

At least the writers learned a valuable lessons, which is that Mariner needs to be on the butt end of physical abuse from time to time to keep the character from being too insufferable.

Other than that, a huge "meh."

Man, they are on a roll with this. They really hit the spot with most of this episodes jokes, I was chuckling almost all the way through. I gave it a 9, one down from last week, as there was not a heartwarming moment in this one. I really liked the development of Boimler in this, he has a shot to be a captain some day.

I really hope they can keep the this pace up for the rest of the season. I'm already thankful they are making a third season. And hopefully more.

No. In fact the only time the Pakleds were ever featured in the novels was a TNG novel A Time to be Born and the short story Work is Hard in the Seven Deadly Sins anthology.

They also dealt with a Pakled artefact in Federation.

Even in Snare, they believed the ‘Crimson forcefield’.

The pakleds are smart enough to know their behavior disarms people and they can use it to their advantage. But totally lacking in technical skills.

I just felt bored with this episode. I know I'm sounding like a broken record here but season 2 is a real let down so far.
