Love ya, TBonz, but it's probably not a good idea to make such declaratives ("in 1969, 'gay' still meant 'happy'") and then backtrack and say you have to look it up.
There's no hard and fast date when the terms "gay" became commonly used for homosexuality. Its origins are still somewhat debateable, and there are instances going back several centuries wher the word can be read in the modern context, but probably wasn't a common colloqialism for a type of sexuality. However as far back as early 20th century NYC, "gay" was sometimes used in the context that "fabulous" is today, as in "I know this gay place..." and there's some thought that this word then got associated with the people using it. That "gay" place became a "gay bar," etc.
Then there's Cary Grant in 1938's Bringing Up Baby: who, wearing a lady,s robe, jumps and says "Because I just went gay...all of a sudden!" There's some debate as to if he meant "gay" in the modern sense, but it was already apparently used in that context in some circles.
There are many instances of it being used to indicate sexual orientation by mid century, and even in mainstream press in the early 60s.

I've heard about the problems in Iraq. The Kurds up north have been revolting against the central government the last couple of years. There is a new, young man who is Secretary-General of the Ba'th Party, and it looks like he'll be able to negotiate an agreement with the Kurds to stop their rebellion. That guy's nothing. All the buzz is about this other guy in the Middle East. He just got appointed head of the Palestine Liberation Organisation: Yasser Arafat. I think this guy is going to settle the Palestinian problem once and for all, and sooner than you think, too.

Oh, God, no! I'm scared enough about Ronald Ray-gun and what he'll do when I go to college in a couple of years. He'll probably gas the place.
If there is one thing I know for sure, Reagan will fade, back to being the B-movie actor he once was. Nixon, now there's a republican I can respect. I sure hope he ends Vietnam like he says he will. Those damn democrats. They start all the wars. They always have and always will.
