I hear he'll be playing a love interest for Mrs. Livingston. I can guarantee you you'll never hear the words "George Takei" and "Star Trek" used in the same sentence again.

Anyway, not only is Star Trek dead for good, sci-fi is a passing fad. Why, I don't think there will ever be, say, a popular film involving people flying around in spaceships and shooting lasers.

I wonder why Star Trek didn't play Takei more as a ladies' man...a young Kirk. It's like they'd rather have him looking starry-eyed across that console at Chekov than to be wooing the female alien of the week. Gosh, you'd think they were trying to portray him as gay or something.

It's 1969, my uncle plays a piano and has a male roommate, but he's not gay...not in 1969...at least I don't think so in 1969.
But TV is pushing it in 1969, Mannix has an African-American secretary. I bet an African-American will never be a candidate for president and an African-American woman will never be secretary of state.

Um, in 1969, "gay" still meant "happy". If one was referring to homosexuals, it was "homo" (short for homosexual of course), or "queer". And queer was still being used to mean odd too, which make it tricky to use the word. I remember in the early 1970s using queer to mean strange and my dad yelled at me. *snicker*. I was naive and didn't get what I had done.
That makes me wonder. Exactly when did "gay" come into usage as referring to homosexuality?
Now I have to go and look it up.

As a film and TV genre, it's evolved beyond mere spectacle.
Defining sci-fi as 'spaceships and shooting lasers', as anything so crass as popcorn entertainment, is dead. It is now to be considered as 'hypothetical scenarios and philosophical questions posed in a fictive medium'.
