Should we achieve the objective of a sixth season we'll be in the midst of the Romulan War, so yes I'd imagine it's going to be darker for that reason alone.
I plan on taking it a stretch further than DS9 did with the Dominion War, since it almost seemed like things were back to normal for while when they took the station back in 'Sacrifice of Angels'.
Specifically, I'm going to take some cues from the latter half of Season Three, and try to really throw us into the conflict, so there will also be this ever present danger surrounding the characters. But that's all a way off yet.
Season Five is the build up toward the war. Let's just say that Enterprise won't always be the clear cut winner when everything's said and done at the end of the larger stories. But it's hard to get answer that question with 100% certainty yet, because there are still a lot of episode gaps to fill.
