Why? If it's not of interest to them and they're happy with their DVDs, why does it matter? This whole thing reminds me of people who snottily point out errors and inadequacies in others' costumes at cons. Some people don't have the money, and some people have it don't want to spend it on that, and some just aren't that interested. Who cares?

Do you have any idea how condescending this statement is?Sure fire way to have someone reject your point. (I’ve politely shown dozens of people the difference between the two settings. A sizable majority prefer it on. I don’t (I think TVs should not be equipped with such features as they degrade the image to a significant degree.). However, I don’t impose my preferences on the actual owners of the TV. That would be...rude.
No. Not really. Polite suggestion, not fanatical proselytizing, is the way to go.

Is someone offering to pay for my upgrades? If not, I'll enjoy my entertainment as I can afford. Quality of picture be damned.

It would be plain wrong not to turn off motion smoothing if someone asked me for help with a home-theater experience. (I hear it may have been intended for sports and such.) Actual film directors have complained about this setting, and I noticed immediately that The Phantom Menace looked wrong when I first bought a TV with it.

Again, why would DVDs be such a sensitive issue that you would see my comments like that? It’s about inspiring people to optimize their purchases in the right direction, to make a few one-time upgrades for better long-term quality.

A few places have stopped selling DVD players, but I think as hard as people try DVDs aren't going away any time soon.

If someone asks for help, by all means, show them the difference. If they prefer to have it on—put it back on. It’s not YOUR TV, nor is it incumbent upon you to impose your preferences on others.

A polite suggestion is fine. Repeatedly pointing out how much better your suggestion is, after you have been (one hopes politely) told something like “thanks, but I’m happy with what I have” is no longer you offering an opinion on A/V matters. It’s you overtly judging others in matters that are none of your concern (how others choose to spend their money on entertainment).

I’m actually mostly on your side. I agree there are many instances where better quality picture (and far more important to me—sound) is worth an extra effort and/or expense. I have made many demonstrations to much of my circle of friends and family (either with my gear or theirs). But where we differ is I don’t keep at them if they prefer settings or gear that do not. It’s. Not. My. Business. (Nor is it yours).

And it’s NOT the DVDs that are the irritant here—it’s your refusal to recognize that others have different priorities than you, even if they are otherwise quite capable of having the “latest and greatest” stuff. No one is suggesting you abandon your quest for ever more perfect A/V. We’d just like you to accept that we don’t all share the same goal.

It would be wrong to do it without them deciding on their own first.
I'm having deja vu here, I think someone was making this same argument last year.

That is their decision, not yours.

I like to have the best PQ possible. Others don’t. Doesn’t affect me any.

Sometimes I smear petroleum jelly on the screen for the full TOS effect.

Petroleum jelly came in very handy for more too when watching post season 3 Voyager

On matters of preference, it's sufficient answer from anyone. Star Trek fans aren't anybody special.

Really, none of this is at all important. Everyone's fine doing whatever they choose - no one's better off, no one's worse.

Maybe because you come at the topic with no subtlety or open-mindedness? No one expects the Format Inquisition!

Take it down a few notches.

And here I thought Star Trek fans were supposed to believe in "Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations". :vulcan:

That only applies to the ones who don't think that they get to dictate what makes another person a Star Trek fan or not. Apparently.

Funny psychological experiment here-the more people push Blu-Ray and HD at me the more I don't want it.

I'm assuming that folks know that Walmart sells pretty decent Blu-ray players for under $50 now.
Though I do find that most new Blu-ray discs are way over priced, they do eventually end up in the under $20 bin.
Not really sure why anyone would use the cost as an objection at this point.

I can see not wanting to have to replace ones DVD collection, but a Bl-ray player will play any DVD just fine. (and many players even upgrade the DVD picture somewhat)
I still have all my DVD's, but began to switch over to Blu-ray a couple of years ago.
The picture quality is much better to my old eyes.
    :)

I had the Season-1 Blu-ray/Digital set on my Amazon wish list from the time it became available but was holding off cause of the high price.
After a couple of months, I got a $27.99 sale offer so I grabbed it.

I noticed awhile back that Amazon will discount items on ones wish list every once in awhile if you leave it there long enough.
The sale price offers usually only last for a day or two after you first see them though then it goes back up.

IDIC doesn’t mean “Anything goes!”, but more like running into an alien culture where entertainment is experienced telepathically, not audio-visually, and now you’re joining in for the wonders of that approach. It’s not like Star Trek would use IDIC to undermine its own premise, that of progress wherever applicable.

Clearly it is. @Tosk is a Star Trek fan and that's the answer they gave.

Ergo "by definition" it's an answer from a Star Trek fan.

Dude, take the hint. This thread isn't all about your pet crusade to convert people. You made your point, ad nauseam, and not everyone was buying. That doesn't make you wrong for trying originally, but it does become wrong to keep pushing it. So either stick to the original topic and stop derailing the thread, or I'm going to have to remove you from the topic.
