I can't be that out of touch, but I don't even know what "woke" means.

    You're not missing anything.
It's a stupid made up term.

I'm really looking forward to the next season and I'm going to offer an unpopular opinion: I hope Pike isn't in it. :nyah:

Yeah, and back in the sixties ad companies would sometimes deliberately make their commercials obnoxious for the reasons you list above. They wanted people talking about their commercials even if the talk was critical. Doing things to make your commercial stand out, if that is what is going on, is an old tried and true marketing method.

But because those methods may now be being used to market to different groups than in the past, those old methods now need a new label, I guess, because to so many, "this is not normal".
And ignorance, evidently. Their hearts may be in the right place (and that's a pretty weak defense if that is what it is meant to be), but they may not realize the extent to which they may have bought into some of the same tropes espoused by the alt-right. No doubt they probably also lack somehistorical perspective. They wouldn't be the first liberals to "think" they were doing the right thing while blindly doing the opposite. I think these guys are dead wrong at least with respect to marketing issue.
To me, you all are way over-thinking this. Since all you have to do to trigger conservatives or alt-righters is include minorities and too many women in positions of power, or other than heterosexual characters. The studios' move toward diversity alone guarantees the aforementioned groups will stay triggered.
This just makes me weary. I don't see how Disney or CBS is marketing any differently than it has been done in the past. It is a happy coincidence (for those corporations) that social media exists. That these corporations are marketing just to stir up the right doesn't seem too cost effective or even plausible.

Err, if their agenda is indoctrination of the masses, why Discovery isn't broadcast on the free-on-air television..? They are very bad at this...
"Did you hear the last inspirational speech of the Führer?"
"Um, no man, I had some problems and I haven't renewed my subscription but, err, I'll catch up on the next month... I think..."

And both liberals and conservatives use it which makes it all that more obnoxious. Paranoid right-wing conspiracy believers use the term as do progressive activists who feel they've stumbled onto some new level of awareness about an issue. It sounds stupid no matter who says it.

Me neither. Can’t we just have a TV series without all this woke, virtue signalling BS baggage that comes with it? Everything has to have a sodding agenda attached to it or ensure that both the left and right don’t get angered. I’m sick of all the “right on” hashtags, statement making bollocks.

You don't know what it is but you want TV to have less of this thing that you (in your own words) don't understand?

No I don’t, but woke, virtue signalling etc are mentioned at every opportunity. Why?.. I want TV to be entertaining without having to pick apart every aspect of it.

Isn't that what this fan board is for? To pick apart every aspect of the show?

The TrekBBS wouldn't even exist if we didn't pick things apart and analyze them on a subatomic level. That's what we DO. We're Star Trek fans.

I suppose the board could be about porn and food without Star Trek to bring us all together but that's kind of what it's already about anyways.

To discuss the series, definitely. To pick apart every aspect? IMHO, no. To do that, the words “fan board” become moot. I may look at things more simplistically than some, but I am entertained by Discovery. Sure, there are some aspects I would change and I prefer certain characters over others, however, when the discussions enter into a political arguments, then perhaps the life has been sucked out of the TV series you are watching. Surely, you are either a fan or not, like the series or not?

I am afraid that, yes, not knowing what woke means does suggest you are a little out of touch. It been a pretty well known slang term for at least the last four-five years. Heck, Websters added it to their Dictionary 2 year ago.

Funny, I see a show where people are doing their jobs in the context that its on a Federation Starship in the mid 23rd century. All this "BS baggage" of what you speak, IMO, is being brought by people in the early 21st century with their own personal axes to grind who are imagining things that aren't actually there. But I see few people here ascribing anything you are talking about on this board.

    This. This VERY much.

Also, I cannot believe, seriously not believe how anyone can still use a term as ridiculous and devoid of actual meaning as "virtue signalling" without spontaneously combusting. It's frankly just silly.
