Hell, the D's computer should have been able to do this rather than seeing Picard and/or his crew look surprised when the computer casually says that a given crew member wasn't on the Enterprise

Well of course, Zora is a member of Starfleet now, she is simply complying with all the well-established security directives calling for the largest amount of blind spots possible for maximum infiltration efficiency and to maximize redshirt casualties in any such situation.
Just like every ship's computer in previous ST series? Isn't it a constant trope of these series that crew disappearances are only known about when the script calls for it?

Sentience isn't really needed for the computer to detect a combadge signal disappearing, as well as a missing life sign.... They could have programmed the computer to notify when it happens.
If anything, her sentience would be an even better explanation for her not reporting Reno's absence if she dismissed it as inconsequential or decided to err on the side of caution and investigate the possible cause further before informing the captain. She's not governed by IF-THEN-ELSE clauses that always run if the conditions are met anymore.
Some nice visuals but ultimately this was a mostly a boring episode.
(We are constantly told that there is ticking clock but watching the episode it does not seem to be so.)
I have to say that season four started very well..but has taken a turn towards worse in the second half. The writers seem to make odd choices that often manage suck out any potential excitement from the episodes.
Also Adira has been somewhat reduced to serve as an Tilly replacement in this season, not very interesting character development to be honest.
I hope the last remaining episodes will better and "save the season" as a whole.

This was a strong episode, but it pales in comparison to the Picard premiere. The writing just seems to be on another level.
Like Owo earlier in the season, this episode tries to give Detmer some background. But also like Owo, she will fade into the background next week. Discovery's weakness has always been the development of its secondary characters. They need to bring in the DS9 creative team to give them some tips. Adira has been shoehorned in as Tilly season one all over again and we're completely ignoring the duality of the symbiont inside someone who wasn't ready for joining.
The away team scenes were the best part of the episode, but I'm going to need a direct line from point A to point B with regards to the emotion inducing soil. Discovery has always had these silly endings and I hope the writing staff doesn't rush into something just to end the season in a nice little package.
Did we really need the runway walk in the teaser for the away team?
That president really can't help but stick her nose into everything. We have this time sensitive mission and Burnham has this ticking clock, but the linguistics doctor needs to say something and Ndoye needs to reiterate her objection as they are already going? I'm also confused why she is working with Booker & Tarka. Sure, she doesn't believe in the way the situation is being handled, but these guys have already fucked up once and basically have the same plan again. She just seems like a walking straw man argument for Burnham to overcome.
I don't know if this is SMG's acting style, but it seems like every one of her responses is given with extreme emotion, like she is trying to reach deep into the other person's soul and pull something out of them.

I will note that a certain overcranked scene near the beginning seemed to be asking the question, "Do Culber, Detmer, Burnham, and Saru have The Right Stuff?" (All it lacked to be a perfect allusion would be Bill Conti's iconic theme.)

Humans are not rational beings, especially under stress. We would like to believe we would be cool, calm, and collected but we are likely more like McCoy than Spock, governed by our passions.
