The musical montage in that final minute or so was beautiful and reminiscent of the end of Gattaca with Adira looking up into the stars as Tilly's shuttlecraft warped away. I rewatched the end sequence four or five times. Wonderfully put together. The musical score with hints at the Discovery main theme thrown in was extremely well done.

I enjoyed the episode a great deal. Sort of like Discovery's Lower Decks. I hope some of the cadets here return in the Starfleet Academy series, because I enjoyed their interactions, even when they were at odds, but especially when they saw each other's point of view. I assume since this was sort of a back door pilot that they will be back, I hope. I'm gonna miss Tilly on the show as a regular, but looking forward to seeing her as a lead on Starfleet Academy.

Get some, Saru. "Would you care to join me for tea?" That's Vulcan for "Let's get it on."

It's somewhat comforting to see that even after 950 years shuttlecraft will continue to be disaster magnets.

'9'.
And the dead actor is wearing a yellow shirt instead of the usual red one

Oh, one more comment...I feel like the AR wall didn't really work on this episode. I'm wondering if anyone else noticed it?

My issue was mainly with some of the close-up shots of actors while they were speaking. I noticed this particularly with Tilly & co on the planet. They blurred the background to give the camera "focus" on the character, but it resulted in it seeming like there was just a flat screen behind them projecting a snowscape rather than actually being in an environment.
According to Mary Wiseman in her Interview on "The Ready Room" that was shot in an acutal quarry in Toronto. Of course parts of it still good have been done with the AR Wall.

Yeah, I saw that after posting. I am sure some additional CGI work was done regardless, because I don't think a quarry would have mountains in the distance.

I'm not sure what it could be. Maybe just some shoddy camera work? The backgrounds really do look flat in a good deal of the shots.

I have to say, while I miss seeing the bridge crew, I like that they're writing episodes where we never even go to the bridge at all, because it allows for more versatility in storytelling.

Except we don't need to be on the bridge to have stories involving Rhys, Bryce, Detmer, Owo, or Nilsson. And then they said now that Reno's coming back. Maybe they should say she's been on another ship other than Discovery to make her reappearance less jarring.

This felt like "Star Trek" again. Not only structurally, like something from the TNG era, but spiritually. It reminded me why I love Star Trek. It was a very good episode, refreshingly little action but interesting movements on the political front and the personal front. I had no idea Tilly would be leaving Discovery but it was her best episode of the series so far. I was disappointed last week because I thought Book had gotten over his grief after the mind meld but this week it's reintroduced and that was a perfect way to do it. Sometimes you think you can let go of these things and they come back to take hold of you again.

I've been very hard on this show the past two seasons and people often say "if you don't like it, don't watch it", but if I had given up on it then I would have missed great episodes like this one.

Loving Gray's new hairstyle.

Do I smell Starfleet Academy spinoff starring Mary Wiseman?

I enjoyed this episode even though Kurtzman has a thing for Ice Monsters chasing a character dressed in cold-weather gear. It's another of his nuTrek tropes, like the whole space jump stuff.

But I do like the Disco has slowed and let the galaxy-ending arc take a backseat in these episodes as the C plot, if that. I do like that this episode had A, B, and C plots that had a beginning, middle, and end.

Also: love the NX-01 or NX-class starship snowglobe. Now it makes me wonder if "All is possible" is a famous quote from Jonathan Archer we never heard uttered in ENT itself but was passed down through history.

It's from his speech at the end of TATV that we never heard.

Discovery is finding its groove now. This was an exceptional episode, cast in the mould of classic TNG and DS9, but with nu-Trek spin.

The writing projected natural emotion, almost as if they heard the criticisms from portions of the fanbase. And the episode provided a true rarity in Trek, wherein all the plots of the episode felt meaty and well explored.

I especially enjoyed the moment where Culber had the tables turned on him and we realize he has his own inner demons to deal with.

Yep, this was probably the backdoor pilot a few of us were suspecting. I wonder if any of those cadets' actors this episode are being considered.
Probably. They were fairly well developed as far as minor guest characters go, and the actors themselves seemed deliberately casted for roles beyond just a single episode.

It'd be richly amusing if DSC of all series told us what Archer said in his Charter Speech but his own series never bothered to.
The remaining Romulans will be hunted down and defeated! Any collaborators will suffer the same fate. These have been trying times, but we have passed the test. The attempt on my life has left Trip Tucker dead and buried, but I assure you my resolve has never been stronger! The war is over! The Romulans have been defeated, and their takeover attempt has been foiled. We stand on the threshold of a new beginning. In order to ensure our security and continuing stability, the Coalition will be reorganized into the first Galactic Federation! For a safe and secure society! All is possible!

I am the Federation.
