As to the "we'll she's had the book learnin" argument. Star Trek has historically shown to promote experience over education.
Probably the most obvious example is O'Brien. Even as an enlisted, the show suggested that he would be the de facto commander of the Defiant if Sisko was put out if Worf and Kira were back on the station or whatever. Even with all of Dax's experience, she wasn't suitable until Jadzia herself had some combat under her belt.

You're right. It was a false equivalency.
Tilly being given command of an entire ship instead of just one body is magnatudes worse.

I like Tilly but I think it's absurd to make her XO. If they somehow lacked a suitable candidate onboard, surely Starfleet would have a few candidates, especially considering the limited size of the fleet.
Put it this way...if Riker was killed in BoBW, what would we think about Picard promoting Wesley to first officer? Or Ensign Nog replacing Kira? Or Kim replacing Chuckles? Mayweather replacing T'Pol? All reasonably capable officers, but none of them ready to be second in command yet.

Discovery has used footage from both Leonard Nimoy's first performance as Spock for television and his final performance as Spock for television.
Again, I feel like the issue really comes down to one of casting.
There's basically at this point only a "core four" on the ship: Burnham, Saru, Stamets, and Tilly. That's it. Culber, Reno, and now Adira are at the next level, recurring characters who are given somewhat weighty roles some weeks, and absent in others (Georgiou and Book are similar, but obviously not in the chain of command). Bryce, Detmer, Owo, Linus, Nilsson, etc are a little jumped up from extras now, but their actors have much lower billing.
Since Mary Wiseman is main cast, Tilly needs to be given something to do just about every week. But her backstory as an ensign just doesn't work well with always putting her in the center of things. Other shows had the same issue mind you. On Voyager, Ensign Kim would somehow be in meetings when lots of extras who outranked him never showed up. But the serialized nature of Discovery and the action often taking place off the bridge makes it more acute for Discovery to figure out. The way they've dealt with this is basically by having Tilly inexplicably glom onto more dynamic characters. First she was Michael's roommate. Then she transformed into Stamets' sole assistant (the others just vanished). Finally she's sort of become Saru's personal aide.
I've a feeling she's gonna get to keep the job.All the people who are against Tilly as FO have to pay attention to what he says...

The crew didn't miraculously solve all of Vulcan's problems by the end of the episode, and the episode ended up being more of a character building one than a plot building one. Nice little curveball. Liked that Burnham kind of finally grew up in this one too.

And in the meantime Saru could be Borgfied or taken prisoner by Klingons.

Yeah, it aired almost exactly 1 month before Undiscovered Country released.
I am simply going to have to watch it again without built up expectations... I will say off the bat I didn't like the Burnham taught Spock a few things line, although I realize it's in this universe. I guess seeing Nimoy's Spock made that seem sacrilegious with a small "s". Plus this was no Drumhead or Measure of a Man, not that there was any right to expect that... part of it was probably too many balls in the air between the Tilly, Burnham's mom and Vulcan story... The three Vulcan/Romulan faction representatives were kind of cookie cutter I thought, but the interplay between mom and daughter to get at the "truth" was strong. As were the crew interactions as usual; not sure you can fake liking each other a lot, seems like a tight bunch. Will have to watch again. With earphones or captions, especially the pillow talk scene was almost indecipherable...
100 years is a long time. They are treating it like the Burn just happened.
Vulcans have longer lifespans so it may have for them. Also we don't know if human lifespans have been extended somehow in the 32nd century.
It's no different from Cadet to Captain Kirk in Star Trek 2009, which was equally absurd.
After some thought, though, I do find it sort of realistic in an unfortunate way. As in the sense that in real life there are tons of situations where a boss has a favorite, picks that favorite over tons of more qualified people, everyone is polite and smiles, etc.
We want to believe Saru is better than your average corrupt boss but he isn't. It's just that he's so nice that people let it slide.
Again, "acting" based on her interaction with Saru vis-a-vis Burnham going rogue.
I'd feel more comfortable with Tilly being named XO if it also had come with a promotion to lieutenant too or something. At least Kelvinverse Kirk was a lieutenant when he snuck aboard Enterprise.
