Re those people getting worked into a frenzy over Reno’s dismissive and glib response to Gene...in the context of the scene, she was in pain and as she later said, “Bobcat? I don’t know, I’m on drugs”. Plus she’s already a grade-A queen of sarcasm and snarky putdowns. It was kind of a throwaway moment. As was the name Gene.

And she acts high goooooood. That fight scene with her still off her face, seeing her react to 32C weapons while high, from a story point of view, it allows "our" character to react like, let's be honest, we all would, geeking out over all the new stuff in a way sober Michael never would. It was one of the highlights of the episode for me, from the moment she started talking a mile a minute and warning them not to give any to Tilly. Loved it.

Seriously, what do you guys want? We've seen Michael pre and post-mutiny, from her first arrival on Georgiou's ship right up to when she made the choice that changed her life, all the way up to "Let's go". Sonequa is easily one of the best actors Star Trek has ever had, and let's be honest, it's been a mixed bunch, sweeting.

finally watched the episode. I found the villain very intriguing and charismatic and Reno was great this week. I gave it a 6, since the rest of the episode was a little bit boring and/or by the numbers. but it's a good 6 and I gave the first episode a low 8 for comparison. they are not that far apart quality wise.

The Saru / Empress dynamic reminded me of how McCoy would sometimes challenge Spock when he was in command.

can't be. technically I'm a millenial (for whatever reason...those made up generations are weird), back when we were still called generation y, and I used icq frequently and was way too old to 'play in my room' in the sense you imply

This week's Discovery was good, if somewhat predictable. Nice to see Empress Gorgeous still get the best lines, though she was really stupid at one point; also nice to see Hugh display some personality, and get to know some of the other bridge crew a bit more. I do wonder if Detmer's going be tainted with Control somehow via her implant, given some of the angles she got. I hope not. The villain guy was familiar but I can't place him, and the same goes for the parasitic ice concept [is that from Lost Planet?]. Some nice quotable bits from both Saru and Reno as well as Empress Gorgeous...

I hope it's not another Augmented character being stereotyped as the big bad. It's her artificial eye of evil that's the problem. #AugmentedLivesMatter

Edited to add: I thought the parasitic ice was a bit of an odd problem that ended up being not much of a problem. It sounds like the kind of stuff you probably shouldn't have just walked through leaving the ship. Inhale one snowflake, and you've got parasitic ice in your bag of mostly water. 3 crewmembers walked through the parasitic ice, with snowflakes all around them, and nobody got ultimate brain freeze?

Yup. I was there for both. Talking Trek and other stuff, until I noticed it was like 3:00 or 4:00 in the morning. I was in college and made sure all my classes were scheduled for Noon or later. I was not a morning person.

At one point, in 1999, me and someone on a chat came up with an awesome story for a TNG Movie. One that would've been a lot better than Insurrection. We were mapping it out scene by scene. We were on a roll. And then I didn't think to save anything from the chat. And now 20+ years later, I can't remember what it was we came up with. I'd probably cringe at whatever it was now, but still...

The problem with that is that she isn't actually a brilliant actor.

She's stiff and wooden, and brings that to pretty much all of the parts she plays.

That's one of the funny things, you have those that say that she's stiff and wooden.

And then you have those who say that she puts too much emotion in some scenes.

She can't win.

And the Mary Sue thing that comes up... yeah, she's a Starfleet officer. First officer. Number one. Elite. Best of the best. And the first human to attend the Vulcan Science Academy. She's supposed to be awesome. Riker was awesome. She's awesome too.

She's not supposed to be some ensign who doesn't know what's going on...

My favorite saying, she's Top Gun. This is a show about someone who's Top Gun.

Meet some dude on a planet in the 32nd century and he's coming at me?
