I think it's possible that they mentioned this because it might be a while (months? a year? a couple of years?) before Discovery arrives. So maybe the Discovery will meet up with Burnham pretty much right after they arrive, but they might not arrive for a while.

Of course, if this happens we likely won't see Burnham go through all that time; I'm assuming the story will soon (maybe by the end of Part 2 of the season premiere) move forward to the time Discovery arrives, and give us a quick idea of what Burnham was doing during that time.

I think that's exactly what will happen. An extended time for Burnham but the Discovery just arrives. She gets to become the local tour guide along with Book. 1 year, 5 years? Not sure how long she'll have to wait.

I don't think the Federation or anyone in it would've intentionally had anything to do with The Burn either. It was either an accident or the handiwork of one of the 31st Century enemies of the Federation who doesn't need dilithium and would benefit from the Federation's destabilization.

I'm still thinking environmental message. It's their normal activities that caused the catastrophe. It'll probably be revealed that the Federation new about it and didn't change their ways. Seems like a good message for our times. We're just before our own "Burn" might start if we don't change our ways.

If either of those things caused it they sure as heck better go back to the past and fix things...

It's probably not a single event that you can go back and fix. Probably a whole way of life that needs to be changed. Nah, they're not going to undo the Burn.

Discovery has shown other drone tech working in the background to clean the ship (notably after Culber and Tyler's mess hall fight in Season 2). There are probably a lot of automated cleaning and repair tech that we just don't see. But, overall, the damage and the technology/resource base requirements to repair the station probably aren't in existence any more after the devastation of the Burn, at least not at the relatively backwater world that Hima seems to be.

Oh I am totally fine with how its handled in Discovery. I was refering to the TNG-era shows. I always feel sorry when somebody has to crawl through the intestines of a ship or station just to change a cable. One should think using a drone or the transporter would be the easyer and safer way. But of course its less dramatic. Or O'Brien just enjoys this stuff like Picard enjoys riding a dune buggy. He probably is kind of masochistic...that would also explain how he can handle being tortured every now and then so well. Its like vacation for him.

still it was always nice to keep it a mystery. This looks like a alternate timeline e anyway. For some strange reason the tech and clothing look similar to discovery era tech and clothing as well as the tech in Picard. It’s like all three eras could easily fit on the same era without anybody realizing they are in a different era.
