Just watched this. I'm in disagreement with a lot of people about this episode, so it's another "Point of Light" type situation. Except I only give it a 7 this time.

My mother's been dead for about as long as Burnham's, so watching how she reacted made me wonder how I'd react. Most people wouldn't understand the perspective I watched this episode from, but that's okay.

I have more to say about other parts of the episode, lots of parts that I like, but I'll save it for later.

After 3 episodes in a row ranked as 10's, I have to give this one a 6.

Also noticed a couple of 2 second shots of Sara Mitich, what's the point? She had more lines when she was Airiam....and that's not saying much....literally.

This was not their finest hour. I actually stopped watching for part of it. And I really hope Leland isn’t the fucking Borg King. I will be very annoyed if that happens. I did enjoy the Phillipa/Ash stuff. Can’t believe I’m saying that. Might have been the highlight of the episode. 5/10.

They were moving the sphere data into it so she couldn’t wear it during that time because technobabble technobabble.

Yes, that was my first thought. It might be that, although Dr. Burnham then says something like, "Let me use it!" so it seems like maybe she could have gotten back in. It might also be because ControLeland shoots the containment field, causing it to shudders. At that moment, the suit activates and Dr. Burnham yells, "Noo!!" I'm assuming that it might be that at that point the suit is in flight mode and nothing is getting in or out of it.

It didn't look like she was that concerned about not being in the suit, so one can surmise that she has probably travelled through the vortex without it before.

She probably tried to ditch the suit during one of her missions trying to break the tether.

That could be!

Because I'm cynical.

Well, that's fair. :)

The episode did answer one long-standing question, how many ships are there in Starfleet? In 2257 or thereabouts, there were 7,000 active ships. (Could there be ships on reserve?)

And what does Starfleet count as part of their order of operations? Do they go all the way down to deuterium tankers and shuttlecraft? To workbees?

The star in your link is only 460 LY (+/-10 LY) away. That's pretty close, and almost certainly in the alpha quadrant.
The Star Charts book has Eta Lupi in the Beta Quadrant and is 440 light years away from Earth, Alpha Lupi is part of the same constellation so it's probably also in the same quadrant.

Discovery uses Star Charts as there map reference.

Usually, in a navy, the count is made of the 'mother ships'.

This is supported when the holographic Pike says that those ships are reliant on the chain of command.

So, if there are deuterium tankers, then they would be counted in that number. Workbees and shuttles would not. (The STTNG Tech Manual mentioned tankers, so they probably exist.)

I've been loving this season, and this episode left me feeling surprisingly cold. Probably because as much as some people have no interest in Section 31, I really don't have any interest in the Borg. Played out, done, shark jumped ages ago. Maybe it's not actually the Borg, but boy it seems similar, enough to distract me from fully enjoying it. That said, all the character stuff was great, just the plot felt wanting. I may need to watch again, though: I've missed some sleep this week and was nodding off.

Georgiou just used the term Prime Universe

I would have thought the count smaller than 7000. And we're told that they lost a third of their ships when the Klingons took out three starbases per "The War Without, the War Within".

7000 is 2/3 of what number? I should remember the basic calculation method...

I actually used the fast forward 10 seconds feature once or twice during the last act of the episode, because I was frustrated at how long and drawn out Michael's decision to say goodbye to her mom was while a battle which would control the fate of the galaxy was going on around her.

Which, honestly was more a failure of direction than writing, but still.
