I don't know how many of you watch The Expanse, but there's a similar dynamic with a villainous character and his two daughters: one becomes defiant, the other obsessed about living up to dad's impossible standards. That kind of dysfunctional family depiction is something I personally find very compelling, as it makes for really good characterisation. One of the reasons I liked this new episode so much was how organic the conflict between Spock and Michael felt. They are both caught up in their decades-long resentment and unwilling to cede any ground. I think that at some point, they'll grow past this at least somewhat, but it's good to see a conflict that feels real and not like forced melodrama. At least that's how I see it.
I haven't seen The Expanse, but I agree on the Spock/Michael dynamic. I hope they'll come to some kind of closure with each other, but we know Spock will continue to resent Sarek until much later.

Maybe "Control" is the reason the Federation/Starfleet had to downgrade their tech around Kirk's time. BSG comes to mind.

I hate that idea, to be honest. I don't want/need to have to screw up modern versions of Trek to make it fit with the original. And I love the original, it is by far my favorite TV series, ever.

Its day has simply come and gone.

I think the chess scene was especially poignant because with others, emotional!Spock is much kinder. His bonding moment with Stamets was sweet. He didn't need to be that nice; he did it because he felt like it. That makes his argument with Michael all the more emotionally powerful. I too hope they'll find some kind of common ground over the course of the series.

I really hope that in the future we will see more things like this, these are the 4 most important species of the federation! Andorians and Tellarites have to be seen more often in Star Trek shows! and work more with humans and Vulcans
rest in peace admirals of the founding species

I haven't seen anyone mention it, but I found the scene where Spock is urging Michael to open the airlock very telling about his feelings for her, in spite of his abiding anger at her. He loves her and doesn't want to lose her.

I have mixed feelings on the idea that ‘AI created by humans to solve problems decides to destroy all sentient life’ is this season’s big bad. On one hand it’s very TOSy and relevant to modern anxieties. On the other hand it’s a bit of a trope and it doesn’t track to me Starfleet would use that to begin with.

Hopefully all the threads come together for a satisfying conclusion.

Gave it an 8. Maybe "Control" is the reason the Federation/Starfleet had to downgrade their tech around Kirk's time. BSG comes to mind. Sad to see Airiam go. Like others have said, secondary characters should be further developed before being killed off. Hope this ties in with the Calypso story.
It would be an interesting development to be sure.

I gave this episode a "9."

Ethan Peck is an excellent actor. I think he is doing a great job of giving the writers the Spock they've written, and hope this series really gives his career a BIG push.

I still believe Airiam is the Red Angel.

Anyway, overall another really good episode. I am generally not a fan of installments where they let us get to know a character then kill them the same episode, but it worked. The Spock-Burnham confrontation was also well done. Too many times these scenes come off as an Acting Class 101 exercise, but Peck and Martin-Greene kept it focused and intense. Burnham could have showed some concern for Commander Nhan after she subdued Airiam - as it was she showed none. Anyone feel Burnham should have yelled "NHAN!" after coming across the upside down corpse in Section-31 HQ? Definitely felt like a nod to Wrath of Khan.

Question: If Control is the enemy does that make the Discovery crew agents of KAOS?

You who give it a 9 or 10, where do you go for the truly greatest episodes of Trek? Spinal Tap 11?

I gave last week's a 9 or 10, by the way. I think it's in the pantheon of all time best eps. But this? I mean, good, yeah.

People are stuck on Mary Sue because it was rubbed in our face early in the show she was the BEST ever.

Her perfor mance sin ce then is spotty, agreed. Hope she learns from the Atrium thing at the end. I! can fix this. Luckily someone pressed the button. would that be a Messiah complex? A "god thing"? Sorry. But even the family being threatened when she was little.

"It's because of ME, and I alone must do something big to fix it!"

Actually I'm liking her more, the more flawed she gets. But she really was presented as more perfecter in S1.

To establish grounds for Kirk's behaviour towards AI in general in TOS, though...

Yes, she was bestest disgraced mutineer who 'started the war, got her ship scuttled, half its crew killed along with its captain. Yep best ever at everything. IMHOPeople called her a Mary Sue because they apparently wanted some hate word other than just psychopath to use to describe her, and Mary Sue after all has its origins in Trek. But that was OK, because they are completely ignorant of what either term means anyway, despite how many times one might try to enlighten them.
