WOOOHOOO!!! All that waiting paid off for me, seriously.

If I wanted to forego any serious discussions, I'd say the episode deserves a 10 just for the SQL bit. Come on, I've just learned that even if my dreams came true and I was a Starfleet officer, the bulk of my time would still be spent sitting in front of a computer writing queries, and this even happened after a day I literally spent with writing queries. So, may I present to you the next Captain of the Discovery for Season 3:

Robert'); DROP TABLE [1031_Crew_MasterData];--

Ahem. Let me start over again. This was really tough to write, as my thoughts are still racing all over the place.

Like I said, it was worth the wait. Yet another highly emotional and mind-blowing piece. Right, I'm one of those heretics that hasn't seen The Cage or The Menagerie, so I only had screencaps and the Memory Alpha synopsis to go with, but still, the episode was able to immediately build the perception that Pike was obviously affected emotionally by what happened three years ago on Talos IV. Vina's presence, while it was unexpected for me, was a great addition to his story as well. I especially liked the flashback to the original episode(s) with its quirky transitions that felt like as if we actually were watching Pike's memories. The cut from Hunter to Mount was also brilliant.

Naturally, the Talos IV storyline was the crown jewel of the episode, but the Discovery one played well alongside it, right until the two were joined at the end. At first I was lamenting how unfortunate it was that we already know Tyler's innocent and how obvious it was that Airiam had hacked the computer, but the story didn't disappoint me and the scene ended with an ominous closeup on her face, to remind me it was intentionally played as her throwing the crew off her tracks. I can't yet predict the outcome of this whole ordeal with the Red Angel and the unnamed enemy threatening to eradicate all sentient life (uhm, so, let's say... Reapers?) will play out. Everything's possible now and I'm actually glad for that. I have a gut feeling it will end with a personal sacrifice connected to Burnham, Spock or Pike, but it's just that, a gut feeling.

Hugh's C-plot was also depressingly beautiful, and his much anticipated calling out of Paul on his behavior felt like a punch in the gut. It was quite predictable that Paul's utter inability to let go would lead him to try to erase everything that happened to Hugh and this would in turn deny Hugh the chance to process everything on his own, but it didn't make it any easier to watch through. Hugh trying to cope by attacking Tyler and his eventual realization that they're not so different was really fitting.

Random observations:
  • I didn't miss captain's logs at all but I liked the variety. I usually think of Burnham's monologues as excerpts from her own personal logs anyway.
  • Tyler doesn't really sound like he actually believes his stated reasons for working with Section 31. I may be overthinking it, but it felt like he was trying to convince himself more than Pike.
  • Spock's state being caused by his mind meld with the Red Angel reminded me a bit of when he did (or will do) the same with V'Ger.
  • Were the planets in Spock's vision Earth, Tellar, Andor (the one with the rings) and Vulcan (the red one) in that order?
  • 'You were inside my mind, yet you still need confirmation. Do you see murder here?' I laughed upon hearing that, as it almost felt like as if it was directed at the audience instead of Burnham.
  • Child!Burnham changing into Adult!Burnham was also a beautiful image that reminded me how I'm reliving my own hurtful memories as if they were happening again in the present.

Can I say once again that Discovery is a honking big time machine? There's absolutely nothing stopping Stamets from jumping 1000 years in the future, as long as he can navigate there and back.
Makes sense, but I think there was dialogue in Calypso that states that its shuttles are ancient, and might not get Craft to his destination, which implies it waits for centuries, rather than jumps.

What is this Control everyone is referring to?
The Section 31 version of Skynet, originally created for the Section 31 series of novels after DS9 ended.

Link to Memory Beta.

It's been mentioned in the last couple of episodes as the AI modelling system which gives Section 31 agents their orders, and presumably is the reason they always seem to be one step ahead.

Pretty crazy that the show is diving into the novelverse.

As far as the series has revealed? The "boss" of S31, which uses AI threat assessment analysis to generate orders for the agents.

Other than that?

The novels have Control as an emergent AI that grew from a threat monitoring computer algorithm even back before the Federation formed. It often "retires" S31 but revives it when needed. Bashir and friends THINK they finally defeated it but in actuality it was simply using them to expunge a problematic split-personality and now goes back into hiding secure in the knowledge that the Federation has reached the point it needed.

Which really makes me think either Disco is lost at the end of this season OR at some point in time, its duplicated somehow.

They could have jumped to 1,000 years in the future, evacuated the whole crew to a planet, and then jumped Discovery back in time and told it to wait in a nebula until their "present."

Though, I guess that would require either Stamets to sacrifice himself, or some weird technobabble solution.

10/10

The start was amazing and it just got better from there.

Must watch it again as soon as I get the chance.

Plus the computer had to have time to evolve.

It is kinda cool they're drawing inspiration from all corners of Trek lore.

The '09 movie loosely based their version of George Kirk from one in the novels Final Frontier and Best Destiny.

Kinda sucks if anyone was invested in the Discovery novels though, at least one has been totally contradicted by season 2.

Damn fine episode. Probably my favorite in the entirety of the series. I appreciated the opening montage with scenes from “The Cage”, but it was a bit jarring going from the TOS designs (costumes, props, cinematography, etc...) to DIS. It may have worked better if they’d recreated the scenes.

The Saru novel from last June, while having some Season 2 information (the names Kaminar and Ba'ul), depicted the Ba'ul as being a typical hunting predator instead of the abductors seen in the show and short trek.
