Damn fine episode. Probably my favorite in the entirety of the series. I appreciated the opening montage with scenes from “The Cage”, but it was a bit jarring going from the TOS designs (costumes, props, cinematography, etc...) to DIS. It may have worked better if they’d recreated the scenes.
It would have been fine if they had used all of the footage as the remastered footage I think. I have no idea why they used unremastered footage for some shots. Maybe they're saving it for the blu ray.

I didn't mind them using the original effects. I'm sure there's some fans who: 1) don't like the remastered effects; 2) don't know the remastered effects exist and would complain that Discovery is ruining TOS; or 3) know the remastered effects exist and still use it to attack Discovery. Using the original effects was probably the safest option.

Were we as viewers aware before "If Memory Serves" that ST: DIS was taking place after the events of "The Cage?" Until this episode, I always assumed it was pre-Cage. But I see no one else posting something along the lines of, "omg, it's post Cage," so I guess it was just me. What was it prior to this latest episode that made it a fact that it was post-Cage?
No, the show was always supposed to be post-Cage. They said that right up front.

I think it was probably just a licensing issue with the whole Paramount distribution thing. As far as I can tell, Cage isn't a part of the TOS episodes on AA. CBS probably would have been fine using the remastered footage, but Kurtzman may have just decided not to tempt fate.

But I take your meaning. There are definitely bits of the remasters I don't care for - specifically the Tholian ship and the DD Machine.

Yes it is, I watched it this morning on my Amazon Prime account.
(it's the Bonus video at the end of the Season-1 list)
(it's also the ORIGINAL REMASTERED version, though WTF that means is beyond me)

I didn't know there was still controversy over it. Robert Justman gave his support for the remastered effects before he died and said the remastering team were putting to the screen what he and his team were visualizing for the show in the 1960s.

It'd be nice if they could resolve licensing issues, if those are the case, before this episode is put to Blu-Ray honestly. If a fee is offered I don't see why the rights holder wouldn't want basically free money for what's not even a minute of footage. But maybe it's more complicated than that.

That wouldn't have been nearly as cool, and is completely unnecessary.

So even though Tyler has been cleared, Pike and Discovery are now sworn enemies of Section 31. I wonder how Tyler will feel about that, although he did basically tell Pike to call off the search for Spock because he knew 31 was tracking him.

Culber will probably be volunteering for an interrogation of Tyler to find out what 31's plans are.

Golly Gee-Wilkers !!!

THERE ARE NO LICENSING ISSUES (PERIOD)

CBS OWNS IT ALL at this point.
Paramount has essentially become another Licensee to make the movies.
(and it gets to collect a share of the royalties from distribution of the previous 13 movies on whatever the popular form of home video is currently)

When are folks going to get that into their heads?

Probably means the original practical effects, not CG?

I'm glad they did the recap the way they did and showed the footage from "The Cage". I'm aware the footage was from 55 years ago and it looks retro. Through my 2019 lens, I take it as artistic licence. And, because of that, I'm glad they didn't do the recap straight like they usually do but put it together in a quirky, "Hey look at this old footage!" way. If they'd done a standard recap, it wouldn't have worked at all. It would've felt jarring. But they way they did it makes it work for me. "Yeah, we know this is silly, quirky, and whimsical but just go with it!" It recapped what went on during "The Cage" and it gets the point across in a fun way. That's good enough for me.

Anyone who can't get passed the difference between 1964 footage and 2019 footage and who couldn't take the recap in the spirit it was intended in needs to loosen up. I'm sure a Disco Version of "The Cage" would look like it fits with the rest of DSC. They just did this for fun.

And it's a nice acknowledgement that "Hey! Guess what? Star Trek existed before Discovery!"

The two things that annoyed me about this episode were the lighting (too many damned lens flares) and the camera angles. It felt very strange on Discovery at times.
Oh yeah, I noticed the flares as well in this episode. I didn't mind the Vina-related ones, as those were nifty transitions when she popped in to talk to Pike and showed Burnham her real face; the others were a bit much tho. And some of the camera angles were kind of weird, particularly wide ones -- like Spock/Burnham in the cockpit of the shuttle as they approached Talos IV, and Pike in his vast ready room -- which almost seemed so wide there was a kind of bend in the image.

Melissa George offered us about as perfect a Vina as one could ask for, IMO
I thought she was great! I actually didn't recognize her at first inside the shuttlecraft (she was very shadowed), but later in the cavern I was like, oh wow, that's Melissa George! I've always liked her since Dark City, S3 of "Alias" and 30 Days of Night.

Pike already knew that Section-31 was following them, he told Tyler so.

In that case the usage of the old effects instead of the remastered effects for the Cage recap was an artistic decision, not a licensing one. Fascinating. :vulcan:
