Spoilers Star Trek: Discovery 2x08 - "If Memory Serves"

I'm glad they ignored the death penalty.
It was just irrelevant plot fluff to hype up the danger of what Spock was doing in The Menagerie.

 

It also doesn't make much sense. "Don't go there or we'll kill you"? Because in the happy future, the only need for capital punishment is for ill-conceived travel plans.

 

The YOLO trend just went too far.

 

It was beautiful.

 

Which ended up being meaningless, even though it proved how dangerous the Talosians in terms of abilities.

 

Have we ever had a fight scene featuring Prime Spock the way he handled those Section 31 doctors here? (I'm not counting Quinto, his Spock is a different character and had a fight scene every movie it seems).

Interestingly, TOS wanted to actionize Spock a bit, but Leonard Nimoy disagreed and invented the Vulcan Nerve Pinch. However, I thought Discovery did a fine job showing off Spock's martial skills while also not making him look overly violent (which is what I think Nimoy was afraid of).

 

I recall some occasional fights, but as with all Disco compared to previous treks (even TOS), never as well executed.

 

Yup. I think it only appears more "violent" because modern [TV] fight choreography has come a long way. But, if you break it down, he really didn't exert any excessive force. He threw up some blocks and only "attacked" enough to make openings for the pinchies.

 

Nothing says they’re being run by control, only that it’s a threat analysis computer they use to decide their course of action.

 

It didn't appear violent at all actually. Especially if you compare that to, say, Mirror Georgiou's interrogation of L'Rell last season.

I think Prime Spock did do some fighting on Nimbus III in Star Trek 5, but I can't remember.

 

I also really like the viperesque visual of the strikes. That's sort of how STO does it, as Vulcan captains have nerve pinch as an active ability. (Which can be a lot of fun.)

 

He gets into a fist fight in the very first ep that ever aired.

 

Doesn't he beat up Gary Mitchell?

 

Maybe he does, it's been a while since I've seen Where No Man has Gone Before. Or the Man Trap.

And Discovery has one of the most famous martial artists in the world now on their team, although strictly speaking Ms. Yeoh probably isn't on the choreography team (maybe she gives them hints ).

 

Were we as viewers aware before "If Memory Serves" that ST: DIS was taking place after the events of "The Cage?" Until this episode, I always assumed it was pre-Cage. But I see no one else posting something along the lines of, "omg, it's post Cage," so I guess it was just me. What was it prior to this latest episode that made it a fact that it was post-Cage?

 

No, I always assumed post-Cage. Pike's service history pretty much confirmed that for me.

 

The Cage takes place 2254. This was confirmed by Icheb's line in Voyager that Kirk's five year mission ended in 2270, and Spock saying the Cage was 13 years prior in the Menagerie in 2267 (the second year of the show roughly being second year of 5 year mission).

Discovery's premiere gives the Earth date 2256.
