Well, at least they invoked Article 14 of the charter as established on Enterprise. Perhaps the Klingon war was the "extreme threat" necessary to initially invoke section 31, followed immediately by the Red Angels. At least I imagine that's how Cornwell is justifying her actions. Who knows? Perhaps she's acting unilaterally herself. Her association with Section 31 would also explain her willingness to blow up the Klingon homeworld in season 1.

It's not a perfect continuity patch, especially given that no mention was made of Article 14 in the discussions between Dr. Bashir and Admiral Ross, which would seem to be a natural reply to Bashir's accusations.

As others have mentioned, perhaps there are reasons that will be revealed down the line that causes Article 14 to be revoked, which would truly make Section 31 a rogue agency.

Given that section 31 was never seen until the Dominion war on Deep Space 9, perhaps that's how section 31 justified its actions during that era. I don't recall exactly how well that would line up with a section 31 episodes on the show, but I'll soon find out. I'm in the middle of a Deep Space nine rewatch and just started season 4.

"I'm heading up Section 31...I see you've met one of my agents."

Uuuuuuuggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

It's like the US Government putting a Las Vegas style neon sign outside Area 51.
I think it's pretty clear that at this point in the timeline Section 31 is not a completely clandestine orginization but rather the Feds intelligence agency.

Ponderous IMPORTANT WORDS, yes. Which are generic and ignorable. A musical montage would have worked better there. But we must always have important words to explai n and be DEEP. Or pseudo Jonathan Seagul -esque Supertramp, what is my place in this world, "deep. "

At least you could give an important speech while standing over a Gorn with a ripped tunic and drama in your voice.

i digress. I liked this ep ok. Was truly surprised at one point involving the cube near the end (no spoilers). My kid will love it.

Edit, yes I too am tired of the Red dotz tease plot. It's like the war we never really saw all last season. CARE ABOUT THIS THING WE KEEP TALKING ABOUT. Man, I wish they would just drop it and have these adventures without pseudo serializati on.

As for Culber, that's as plausible a Sci-Fi Resurrection as any. Is energy transfer to the mycelial network and then restored to natural state in the real universe any more "out there" than being restored by a device that can transform a nebula into a functioning star system, even for just a short time?

I have to admit, that right when Culber tried to leave the network, I had a last-minute premonition that he wasn't going to be able to leave. I am glad that that turned out to be a fake out, but I sincerely hope that this isn't the end of the story. One cannot experience the things that Culber has experienced and come out the same person.

And consider this, remember how fast Starfleet clamped down on any information on the mirror Universe because it might compel people to try and travel there to find duplicates of lost loved ones? Imagine how they would react once they found out that there was a way to actually bring back your loved ones?

Hmm. Starfleet banned Genesis technology as well. Apparently they don't want to find themselves in the resurrection business.

This was also the best paced and directed episode of the season. The story was clean, straightforward and uncomplicated.

S31 is way more believable and interesting as an intelligence agency than some sort of secret society like it was conceived as in DS9. I wouldn't have cared for their involvement in DSC if it had been the Federation Illuminati.

Cornwell rules

Pike was a badass in this one. I love that character.

I believe it's the right move to soft reboot MU Georgeau like they've been doing. Yeoh just frigging chews scenery and I love every second of it.

I just remembered that little fact, but surely Pike would have been told about that along with everything else that happened on Discovery. I wonder what the Starfleet Official story is on Lorca.

The pacing of the episode was all off. It seemed like they warned Burnham and the others like 20 times that "you have to leave now". The character of Tyler at this point is waisted energy by the writers. Every time the character gets a scene I get bored. They should cut their losses and explain him away somehow. I voted 6 out of 10.

how is Nhan the new security chief? wasn't she from engineering?
Yeah and Geordi was a pilot and Worf was....uh, a guy on the bridge.
In this century, something could cause them to become disavowed
I suspect a crime they didn't commit. If you have a problem... if no one else can help... and if you can find them... maybe you can hire... Section 31.

I would agree this whole Blake's 7 meets Seal Team 6 with a twist thing is slightly more palatable than the "Grr Evil Sloane Rouges Whatever" thing from DS9. But it's still pretty silly.
